The Checkers is certainly fine dining at its best. From the minute you arrive you're greeted by charming and welcoming staff, and in our case on a wet and windy day, a lovely log fire. We enjoyed a superb overnight stay in a very pretty and nicely furnished room. The tasting menu was a delight, every dish complimented each other... More

Dined here three times now and it remains our favourite in the English/Welsh borderlands. Montgomery itself is a delight - setting, castle, church, tea rooms, Offa's Dyke and possibly the finest ironmonger's in the world - but the wonderful and unique Checkers tops it all. Finest French cuisine served with Welsh homeliness and featuring regional produce. Not cheap but for... More

While serving classic french cuisine to a high standard this place fails to provide good value for money. The food is very rich and somewhat smothered in rich sauces - definitely ask for any sauce to be served on the side. The ambience is good, service was excellent, definitely a place to check the menu online before booking since food... More

We had a mid week break here which included the 6 course tasting menu and breakfast in the morning. The Checkers is a former coaching Inn that has been converted into a restaurant with 5 bedrooms The bedrooms are shabby chic in pastel colours and very comfortable, whilst the restaurant has a bar area with sofas and two dining rooms... exceptional food, exceptional service and beautiful surrounds are part of the experience at the delightful checkers restaurant, in montgomery. my friend and i visited for a saturday evening dinner and enjoyed sumptuous dining. it's been a while since i've eaten at a restaurant where every course is memorable: at checkers, it was. from a beautifully earthy-sweet starter of goats curd,... The Autumn Taster Menu and accompanying wine flight were superb. Subtle, interesting, enjoyable, well-matched wines with seven courses of fine food. All this doesn't come at discount prices, but If you are looking for something exceptionally good out in the Welsh countryside, you'll go a very long way to improve on this restaurant.

Four of us came here for dinner. The staff were extremely helpful from the moment we arrived. Drinks were served in the ante-room along with some delicious canapes. The cheese souffle as a starter was great, as were all the main courses. We drank some Austrian Pinot Noir which was very good and not overly-expensive. Excellent!

Our third visit already (a bi-annual affair it is becoming) and still very satisfied. We were recognized by the two sisters, our food was delicious, the wine was exquisite: well worth the visit. Prices are reasonable, the food is tasty (my beet and port soup was delicious), the decor is friendly and the service personal.
