Unique and a thoroughly honest yorkshire experience

Whilst they clearly have more customers than they know what to do with, this pub is very unspoiled. Down to earth food, good value and great service - everything I associate with the best of yorkshire. Whether you just want a strong hot brew and some chips after walking up hills in the rain, or a... read more

We arrived having walked several hours in the driving rain, to a blazing log fire, a selection of beers and some delicious hot soup.

Called in for tea over Christmas, there were 10 in our party and we had pre booked the table. Everyone had something different, it all came out on time and was really good. No complaints here, have been a few times to this lovely old pub and have never had a bad meal yet. I would definitely recommend this place,... More

A wet wild evening high up on the moors. Quiet inside. Pleasant enough food. Nice surroundings. Let down by poor service. Only 11 covers so not exactly busy. No 'how's your meal / would you like another drink'. Waited an age for 'would you like the dessert menu?' Paid & left. Somewhat underwhelmed. Shame.

Stayed here for two nights to rest. The staff were great, helped with luggage (up the very narrow stairs), there was a bath in room..great just what we need! Internet was good. Food delicious (meals way to big...but my husband didn't complain). Breakfasts were homely and wholesome. It was raining on our rest days there, so we didn't see around... More

A drive across the moors led us to trip over this pub and to wish that we were not driving, but walking, as an afternoon looked to be very easy to spend in this relaxing and homely pub, with a few drinks to sup; alas, we just stopped for lunch. It's never easy to please the three generations of the... More

This was recommended to us by a local and we certainly were not disappointed, the setting and location is breathtaking. We walked with the dog for sunday lunch and the food was superb, the staff very friendly and helpful. We had traditional roast beef and yorkshire pudding, which was spot on; they also had lost of other delicious alternatives on... More

Wonderful food, not too expensive, stunning views, pleasant staff. Well worth a visit. Low period ceilings, so mind your head in doorways - as we say in Yorkshire "Duck or Grouse".

Visiting from Waterford in Ireland to visit family in Middlesbrough,Stockton and Hartlepool. After an enjoyable walk around Whitby on a Sunday morning, drove into the north Yorkshire moors, passing Filingdales, eventually meeting up with Family about 2,000ft up on the top of the moorland . What a joy to find the Lion Inn,sitting at the top with an unspoiled view all around it.... More

This is a pub that I visit regularly. The owners are helpful and courteous. The beer is good and the food - pub grub - comes with both quality and quantity.
