We went here for a late lunch on a sunny Sunday. There was a scotch egg ploughmans on offer which didn't appeal. The landlord heard me saying I fancied a ham one so immediately said he could a ham or cheese one if we preferred. We ordered one ham and one cheese which arrived with home made piccalilli (delicious), shallots... More

My wife and I took mother in law to the Trooper for Saturday lunch. The women had a bucket of Calamari each and a plate of salad and a bowl of chips. I had the home made Trooper Burger with bacon and brie. The Calamari were superb, but unfortunately my Burger had inedible bits in, which put me off. The... More

I've eaten here a lot over the years and don't know why i've never reviewed it before. The food is always good and reasonably priced; normally busy with a nice atmosphere. Hassan is a great host and is always very welcoming - It'll be a shame when he eventually retires. Recommend a visit.

Second time we have been for lunch. Staff are very friendly and welcoming. Decor original and unique. Choice of a la carte or blackboard menu. Good range of beers and wines. Food is freshly prepared and well presented. Thoroughly enjoyed our choices one from bar menu one from a la carte. Menu seems to change frequently.

My wife booked this lunch as a special treat for my birthday and what a treat it was! Although the traditional Christmas menu was available, we opted for the a la carte and enjoyed main courses of Beef Wellington/Lamb Shank with seasonal veg. The wine was excellent and the service very good, the owner was very attentive. The sweet arrived... More

Called in on the off chance after a busy day out. A good glass of Merlot was a good start, but we thought the food prices were rather high for what is really pub food. Can't complain about the food itself, plenty of it and well cooked, but we thought £33 for two main courses was rather steep

I will start by saying that I have not eaten here and was really looking forward to doing so. I bought 3 x £15 vouchers from deal monster, giving a total spend of £90 on food. For personal issues and reasons, I forgot to use them before the expiry date, but did notice the day after and called the Trooper... More

Been here many times and never had a bad meal. Always well cooked and presented. Had a friend with us who is dairy intolerant but this was not a problem. Staff always friendly. Well worth a visit

Friendly welcome on arrival Really good evening meals both days, friendly locals to chat with in the bar, well kept beers, very smart bedroom, adequate bathroom. Stayed for two nights while working in Portsmouth. Unfortunately that required leaving before breakfast was served and I was disappointed not to have it discounted off the bill - a feeling of annoyance that... More
