Good African cuisine :)

The restaurant all in all has nice ambience and the staff are pretty good too. Not a too formal place yet not too causal as well, they have been able To maintain a good balance. The food is also quite tasty of you are keen to try African cuisine. I really loved it and feel that they have better... read more

Had a family dinner a couple of nights ago and enjoyed it very much. The staff were very warm, genuinely caring and this was reflected in the food - made with love. The high ceilings and charming building made for a lovely setting. We will be back to this restaurant.

We visited Nyala last weekend for a friends birthday. The food came out pretty quickly considering there was about 10 of us. All delicious meals, with lovely spices and flavour! I loved my 4 vegetarian platter with the injera. The 3 choice meat platter was also yummy. Plenty of injera provided for our group, and great sized portions with very... More

You need to be a little adventurous to eat here but great to go outside your comfort zone when eating out ever now and again. Gluten free everything as no wheat used. Food can be meat or vegetarian based and is served on a large flat gluten free bread more like a pancake. Pull off a bit of bread to... More

After having a somewhat disappointing dining experience at another African Restaurant we thought we would love the try this type of food again. I did a google search and as we were planning to be in the Fitzroy area and this restaurant was listed in the top 5 African Restaurants in Melbourne were decided to give it a try. Restaurant... We were part of a group of 40+ who made a Friday evening reservation well in advance to celebrate a birthday. Although the food was tasty and the room attractively decorated, we waited over 2 hours for the main part of our dinner to arrive. As discussed when phoning for the reservation, we all ordered the same 'banquet' menu, which... More

Having returned recently from a trip to South Africa, we were in need of some African food. This is definitely the place to go. African food is beautifully spiced which we love. We shared an entrée of 4 picks from the entrée menu, just delish and beautifully presented. The mains are huge so next time we would share. Could not... More

We had a delicious meal for a family birthday celebration. We all opted for the combos so that we could sample the variety of mains and everything was really tasty. Having just returned from a trip to Africa it was fun to be surrounded by the African decor. And finally the staff were very friendly and attentive. We would recommend... More

We loved the delicious food and service at Nyala. Must try dishes are Bobotie - A South African delicacy made with minced beef, sultanas, almonds and African spices (see the snap); Nyala's Ethiopian stew & Gambian Domeda. Order the curries with Injera (a fermented pancake). The food tastes even more exquisite when paired with one of the smooth South African... More

This restaurant is so great. Over the years we've been many times and we hadn't been for nearly 2 years. Why had we waited so long?! The variety of food is fantastic and so yummy. If you're with 4 or more people get a banquet so you can have some of everything. We even took two kids and they were... More
