Decided to venture out to Fitzroy one day. Tried Sonido! which is a southern american cafe. Love the vibe and absolutely love the food!!!! Tried ropa vieja arepa (i.e. old clothes beef?). Decided not to add any sides to my arepa which got me a little concerned as I dined at other cafes and usually w/o sides, the dish isn't... More

Sonido is part of the current wave of Mexican/Latino/Latin American food and drink that is sweeping Melbourne and other cities. In the case of his tiny, crowded cafe located in the now uber-trendy Gertrude St, the geographical references are Colombia and Venezuela. The menu is very small and consists mostly of empanadas and, especially, of the flat corn cakes called... More

Funky little cafe, South America style food, reasonable coffee and interesting and different options for breakfast. Worth a visit if you are in the area.

enchilada - bought in so no chance to leave out the cheese. Beans tasteless. we were a group of 5 and they forgot one meal completely - no apology, and then it tookanother 30 minutes after several prompts. the staff all seem depressed. surly service. very limited menu. Avoid!

Fan of Good coffee or Portuguese tarts? Sonido must be your recharge point of choice after strolling along the Gertrude st shopping strip. Frequented by hospital employees seeking more than cafeteria standard caffeine in a cup, the atmosphere of this breakfast/lunchtime hangout will leave you chilled out no matter what the weather is up to.

Ran in here by chance during heavy rain fall, and was amazed! Did not try the food, but it looked good from a distance. We bought "Cuba Libres" and it was the best Rum I have ever tasted! Served with wonderful organic Coke.

Sonido is a few doors from what was once the toughest neighbourhood in Melbourne. The Champion and the Rob Roy pubs were scary, violent places last century. Many a tooth was lost and blood spilled on a Saturday night. But the grungy, working class heroes have long gone and Gertrude Street now caters to a new tribe. Sonido is perfect... More
