On the plus side - HUGE portions. The downside - mediocre quality fish, and the real disappointment - stodgy and soggy batter, very very greasy. Mixed views on the chips, which one of us liked and the other didn't.

A bit late with this review but I felt it needed saying. I was sailing round Britain last year and spent a night at Helmsdale. The chap we were moored along side in the harbour recommended la Mirage when we asked about fish and chips. He warned us about the size of the portions though which still didn't prepare us... More

Well I have had fish & chips many many times throughout my life and this place beats them all hands down ! Fantastic atmosphere, fantastic service and fantastic food ! My daughter ordered a vegetarian burger and when it came it was two burgers served on a fabulous salad with everything from lettuce & tomatoes to peaches & eggs, it... More

Helmsdale is part of my childhood but I'm not being biased here. The food at La Mirage is always very good and not overpriced. Staff are very friendly. The late Dame Barbara Cartland used to eat here (she had a holiday home close by) It's just a little on the quirky side but that only makes it more interesting. You... More

This place is attached to a fish and chip shop which cooks all the food. You get a massive portion of well cooked food. The staff are incredibly friendly and the service for food and ordering is quite prompt. They have the most amazing meringue desserts on display. I was going to have one but didn't have room after my... More

Well worth a visit for the superb quality of the fish and chips. Most interesting decor. Quirky but fun.

Food was terrific. A little gem passed many times but never gone in. Warm welcome and service great. Worth stopping off at Helmsdale for.

OK, it is just a chip shop in a small town you'll probably pass through, but the chips in La Mirage are easily the best I've tasted. Crispy, hot, irregular shapes (including those little crispy bits) and in portions that would blow any Weight Watchers calculator (really, the large one would feed 4). I've had 2 carry outs from here... More

It was fortunate that we had a late lunch when there was time to banter with staff. This was the "fun" part of our meal. We pigged out on the large portions of food - impressed with the freshness of the haddock. A nice part of the beautiful journey up the NE Coast.
