We found the Crannag Bistro almost by chance - it was the nearest restaurant to where we were staying in Bonar Bridge - and it's absolutely superb. Owned and operated by a couple who are real foodies, every dish is based on local produce of the highest quality. The menu is imaginative and satisfying, supported by a thoughtful range of... More

While fly fishing in Scotland, we were very pleased to join Ian Smith for an outstanding dinner, Ian is the owner, front of the house, and day time chef. He is a fountain of knowledge and insight on food and what to do in Scotland. His Bistro is small and cozy, definitely make reservations. The food is also great. We... More

A real touch of sophistication in the area, perhaps the best restaurant around, but you pay for it. The host owner was very friendly as were the staff. Would I go back, not sure, but it is so hard to find somewhere decent to eat in the north highlands serving local produce. Save up and try this place..

Thank you for your review! We are delighted that you enjoyed the ambience, food and hospitality at the Crannag. We are surprised, however, that you think it expensive - you can have a three course meal for £18, our most expensive bottle of wine on the current list is £24, and our spirits are all served in 35 ml measures... Having family in the village means that we get to try the changing menu a few times a year. Fresh produce, well sourced and cooked brilliantly by the lovely Kathy. Ian as host, barman, waiter and font of knowledge on all things food related is a warm welcome. Booking a must to avoid disappointment but they will try their best... More

One of best dining experiences ever. Start out at small bar with a drink ( top whiskys and beers) and chat with warm welcoming Ian. Order your food, then drift to table when first corse is served. Dozens of visits, each better than the last. Most recent was as starter the best cheese souffle ever (added spark of chutney?) and... More

My husband, our son and I had dinner at the Crannag this evening. Ian, the host, told us about the different dishes and made it very difficult for us to choose. We went with the Highland Onglet steak and the Brazilian Moqueca. Both were really good and it's easy to taste that the food is freshly made. Ian was very... More

Thank you for your great review! It was a pleasure to see you and so glad you enjoyed your evening with us. We always welcome well behaved children and your wee one was certainly a credit to you both! We ate here on the recommendation of a friend and we were not disappointed. The restaurant is tiny so booking is essential to ensure a table. The menu is quite small and written on a blackboard but each of the dishes our family ordered were beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. The owner was very knowledgeable about all the dishes explaining... More

We were looking for a meal in Lairg and found a parking place that happened to be outside a Bistro. It was 6.10pm and open, and though it was empty the owner said they were fully booked. This was disappointing because he said there was no where else locally. He checked with his wife who ran the kitchen and offered... More

Thank you for your review! We are in fact in Bonar Bridge and not Lairg, some nine miles away! We were fully booked on the evening you called in but did mention that there may be food available at the local hotel - their kitchen had been closed the previous night so we weren't sure. However, you were kind enough... More

The food served here is locally produced, fresh and the chef slow cooks the meat at a precise temperature for several hours. As a result the meat (lamb in particular) just melts in the mouth. The desserts are to die for ! And the local beer is chilled and delicious. I have eaten at many bistros around the world and... More
