The starts were over fussy and not good value. The mains were good present well. A good range of "real" ales

Staff were fabulous on our recent booking for a party of 14. They were helpful, attentive, pleasant with the children in the group and nothing was too much trouble. Food was tasty and well cooked if not a little on the expensive side, but thoroughly enjoyable experience.

Used this pub as a meeting place, ended up staying for our lunch. Lovely food, came hot and freshly cooked to order. Lovely hot pot of tea and coffee. Very friendly staff, very friendly manager.

We just went in for a meal one evening. The service was very good and so was the food. Good value and as I'm Gluten free they could cater for me without a problem.

Came here on sunday to celebrate husband's birthday, with our two small children. Staff were helpful, and friendly. Food was divine - I had the mussels in blue cheese sauce, husband had burger. Kids had sausages with chips and grilled chicken and chips. All great quality, and proper sausages rather than the cheap version you sometimes get in children's meals,... More

We took a large party in Nov 2013 for my husband's 40th birthday. The John Barleycorn were incredibly flexible, helpful and friendly throughout - from booking and confirmation by phone through to our visit, service, food and settling up at the end. The food was absolutely delicious. Our party included many (well-behaved!) children under 10 and the pub made them... More

This is a lovely old pub and the service is friendly. You need to book, it's always full. Two out of five were happy, but the risotto was way too sweet due to too much onion marmalade, the salmon was too salty and the chilli moules, though delicious, were too few, more like a starter portion. Chips were undercooked, not... More

I have got to give this place 5 stars which I rearely do. Wonderful genuine pub atmosphere, excellent enthusiastic and helpful service and amazingly good value food. Our party had fish and Chips - real homemade chips (not frozen) and genuine mushy peas without mint, sea bass, a really well prepared schnitzel and the pate starter can't go without a... More
