Great Institution

Great Tonkatsu institution. Very crispy and juicy product and a very good, old-school place. The place is massive and worth exploring.

Great place for a tonkatsu dinner. Price is also reasonable. The Kurobuta tonkatsu set is the best. The staff are also very friendly and helpful. There are 4 seating area, but the suggest you ask for the main dinning room. Also, you can eat as much as cabbage as you like!! Just ask for more! Will return, again.

....as I write this review! Had this restaurant on my list of must-eats in Tokyo and it will be right at the top of my list the next time I'm here. Take the A2 exit at Omotesando station and when you get to street-level, look out for the 'Maisen' direction signs above you. It will just be a couple minutes... More

tried the lunch set fillet deal and it was great. the sweet sauce was really nice and the spicy one was ok. probably a mix of both will be good. crust was really thick and crispy. meat was soft and juicy. definitely one of the best. i ordered additional tonkatsu to try the black pig version which was supposed to... Whenever I visit Harajuku/Aoyama, I make sure to have lunch at Maisen Honten. There are Mausen restaurants everywhere, but the Honten has everything that I like; large space (2-story building with several different sections, the building was used to be a public bath house many years ago), systematic, speedy, yet friendly service, many choices on menu (I noticed that they... This restaurant serves a wide variety of deliciously light & crispy tonkatsu (fried breaded pork), both as individual dishes and in larger set menus incorporating sashimi and vegetable dishes. The prices are quite reasonable given the high quality and the location near upmarket Omotesando. We were seated in the main dining room, where I thought the ambiance a little sterile... More

Took my old friend out for his favorite Japanese meal. He lived in Tokyo for 9 years back in the day and talked up and down about Tonkatsu. He was blown away by this place and is still talking about it. We had a sushi platter to start and I knew it was good from there. The tonkatsu platter was... More

The Japanese love to go to particular restaurants that do even just one dish very well. One goes to Maisen for the tonkatsu. They serve other things, but not to order the tonkatsu would be like ordering fish and chips in a steakhouse. Now, there are many different ways to have your tonkatsu - loin or fillet, type of pork,... More

We were in Harajuku Sunday afternoon on Omotesando and needed a good restaurant. We found Maisen thanks to the Trip Advisor App and Google Map (a few streets parallel to Omotesando). There was a short wait and the place had a lot of tourists but the Tonkatsu was amazing. It really melted in your mouth. We had it elsewhere but... More

Staying in Shibuya / Harajuku / Ebisu

Neighborhood Profile
Shibuya / Harajuku / Ebisu
There are countless opportunities to shop in the Shibuya and Harajuku districts, especially in shops that focus on Japan's "Kawaii" culture. The trendiest areas are around Shibuya’s Center district, Harajuku's Takeshita-dori and in Omotesando. If you need to recharge from all the shopping, you can easily refresh yourself in Meiji Jingu or Sasaki Park. In contrast, Ebisu has a more grown up ambiance of calm and cool. At the Museum of Yebisu Beer you can learn about the beer that was responsible for the town’s name, and enjoy dining at the popular noodle shops in the surrounding area.
