My faith in the Michelin guide rating system has been severely stretched on this one, as it rapidly approaches the same status/use as Zagat that of 'Telephone Directory' only. This restaurant deserves its 3 Michelin stars and #33 in the world ratings. The food isn't shouting out to you like it it might at say Eleven Madison Park, but it is subtle and wonderful. A few of the strongest parts: -Service was personal and attentive. They walk you to your cab and the chef comes out to see you... More

I heard amazing things about Ryugin and a friend of mine compared it to El Buli. We were there on a Friday night and the energy there was good but overall the food was just ok. There were a few good dishes but most of what we had was just average. Maybe we were there on a bad night and... More

Or rather bizarre. Best sake tasting we had during the two weeks stay in Japan. Average culinary experience, however one can highly value the food presentation. The menu was totally in wrong order and quantities i.e. stuffed chicken wing in between the two fish courses (I know chicken wing it's a Japanese Christmas tradition, but this way it was just... Absolutely delicious! The combination of all the ingredients are so perfect! We loved every single dish and can only wish we can come back again for another meal! The location is not far from the station but it's tucked away in a quiet small lane and we were lost for quite a while... And have to make reservation 1 month... More

Went for New Years Eve and had one of the best meals of my life. No dish was in any way a disappointment, all were superb. The current winter menu is very well balanced and sized so we left full but not stuffed. The wine list is not too large as to confuse, good prices across a range and also... More

Excellent food, excellent service. We prebooked a couple of months in advance. Set menu, incl. wine/sake. European wines pretty expensive, but the sake's were fantastic!

The meal was was reasonable refined. It follows the basic Kaiseki structure, but you can see the western influences. The positives of a meal at Ryugin you can read from the press... I had three issues with Ryugin. The broth in the simmered dish was poor - weak, watery and lacking complexity. I've had better broths at a chosen-at-random Kaiseki... More
