We chose Hantei mostly for the ambience. We were not disappointed. Set in a historic old wooden building, it has a great ambience. Set menu consists mainly of 8-12 skewers and some side dishes. Good seasoned food, which is more attuned to western tastes relative to other places. But is is mostly about the setting

This is a restaurant we got out of a guidebook. It is located in an old wooden house a bit off the beaten path, approximately 15 minutes walk from Ueno park/train station. Very charming upstairs in japanese style, downstairs in western style tables. It came highly recommended, but outside there was no sign of any english being spoken inside. The... More

The restaurant is located in a nice and old building. The service is very quick and friendly. Ambiance is very authentic. We were 2, we had one set menu, a second course and added 6 skewers. The appetizers were good. The skewers are deeply fried, and not all are very tasty. Duck, mushroom, onion, asparagus and fish were ok. We... More

You can certainly eat more cheaply in Tokyo, but you'll find few places with a more romantic setting. Hantei occupies one of the few old-style buildings you'll see in Tokyo - an old merchant's house, with western-style chairs and tables on part of the ground floor and japanese-style low tables and cushions in the rest of the house. It's in... More

Lunch is a set-menu consisting of lovely fresh vegetables ready to dip in dark soba miso paste and munch between servings of small skewers of lightly breaded fried delicacies: shrimp, ginger, edamame, scallop, succulent beef, etc., followed by ocha-zuke ("tea over rice" with pickles) and finished with cool pear jelly. Everything in perfect flavor and presentation. The building encloses a... More

Hantei is just round the corner from Tokyo University, and about 15 minutes' walk from Ueno. Among modern buildings, itstands out as a tradional, mainly wooden construction. Upstairs you can sit on cushions, or tatami in a traditional Japanese way. Downstairs you can sit at tables. The speciality of Hantei are delicate morsels of vegetables, meat, fish and seafood, in... Staying in Ochanomizu / Akihabara / Kanda

Neighborhood Profile
Ochanomizu / Akihabara / Kanda
Ochanomizu boasts its academic foundations starting with Yushima Seido, the birthplace of modern day Japanese education. The area has kept its college town feel with several university campuses. If you head towards Jinbocho, you'll find musical instrument and sports equipment shops, and an area of used bookstores for students and anyone interested in literature and the arts. Akihabara is well-known for its computer and electronic goods stores, and is now hugely popular as the must-visit mecca for people interested in anime and games. Kanda is an office district where you can find loads of reasonably priced izakayas popular with professionals who stop to eat and drink before making their way home.
