On the Up!

I've been visiting St Chinian for many years and Cafe de la Paix has always been my favourite for good food, value for money and, especially, the lovely garden. Like other reviewers, I too have experienced the "solemn" service but we happily traded this for the overall advantages. Now it's all... read more

I've been visiting St Chinian for many years and Cafe de la Paix has always been my favourite for good food, value for money and, especially, the lovely garden. Like other reviewers, I too have experienced the "solemn" service but we happily traded this for the overall advantages. Now it's all changed as the principal waiter has retired after many... More

We arrived on spec just as the staff were having their evening meal, so had a short wait in the bar. It was a lovely warm evening so we were delighted to be led through the restaurant and out into the courtyard beyond. This was a large walled area which incorporated (I think) 4 mature trees, standing 4 square and... More

Good casual restaurant at back of the main bar in St Chinian. Simple food, but good. Service Ok, but very French!

If you are confident enough to walk through the PMU bar, you will find a lovely courtyard at the back with several tables for dinner. The menu was very good value and the cooking really pretty good. The portions are big (my husband ordered melon and cured ham and it was a whole melon with plenty of ham and a... More

The best thing to be said about La Paix is that it has very generous servings of authentic French food at very reasonable prices. It is right in the middle of the main street and has a beautiful outdoor area. It normally has a week day formula (all inclusive) 3 course meal with wine included for about 12 euros. The... More

The rear outdoor shaded terrace is beautiful. The daily menu is a very good value, comes with wine and 3 courses. This year, 2013, the food was very good. Last year, not so much. Everyone comments on Philippe, the sometimes surly waiter, but you get used to him. This year he even smiled at me. I live in the area... More

The setting in the back garden under Lime trees is very nice, but the service wasn't great and the food was very variable in our party of eight. Most of our party had a pretty negative overall experience though I had a couple of nice courses. One person ordered frogs legs having been told by the waiter that if she... More

I have eaten many times in this restaurant, and the food is very good value, and mostly well cooked. Portions are substantial, and the house wine is very palatable and cheap. The restaurant is presided over by a 'Basil Fawlty' style proprietor, who is what one would call an acquired taste! Luckily the other waiters are friendly and helpful. They... More

We ate with a friend for lunch last week. The food was good country French fare and quite fresh. My only real complaint was that the tomatoes were tasteless and in this region there is no excuse for that. On arrival they were a little rushed but our welcome was not good. Then the young man who served us was... More
