Great experience

Had the chef's menu. It was very good except for a couple of the courses. The wagyu beef was a let down for me. The waiters could have told more about the food instead of just saying what it was. Nice that the head chef came and greeted us.

This restaurant is located in a pretty courtyard (if you chose to sit outside) in the heart of the historic district of Alicante. The serving staff were attentive and unobtrusive. The food was just spectacular. My husband and I enjoyed every course of the taster menu which had clearly been put together with a lot of thought and creativity. At... More

We loved this restaurant on our first visit two years ago. And it was still great in January 2014. But this visit . . . . . Something was lackng. We sat in the bar and ordered from the tapas menu - gorgeous flat bread with honey and chèvre, delicious squid sandwich, but the barcalap, oriental lamb and braked pork... More

I had dinner here with my GF. The restaurant is modern with a cosy feel. The lights were a bit dimmed, which gave it a romantic atmosphere. I really liked the way it was decorated. For a michelin star restaurant the prices are very reasonable compared to other michelin star restaurants. Yes, it is expensive compared to other restaurants in... More

My wife and I sampled the taster menu; had an evening meal and also lunch at this restaurant that is part of the hotel in which we stayed. Each meal was memorable. The very talented chef, Maria Jose San Roman, has created a range of dishes that are simply divine. The superb standard of cooking, delightful presentation and wonderful flavours... More

Had the testing menu which was superb. We didn't take the wine choice and the bottle of Alicante red we had didn't quite match the rest of the meal but it was a memorable experience.

Having been fortunate enough to eat in a number of similarly rated restaurants I was stunned and delighted by the relative value for money of Monastrell. Whilst staying for a night hotel Hospres Amerigo (next door) we booked for an 8.30pm table. On arrival we realised that 8.30pm is early for Spanish diners but made little difference to the quality... We've travelled the world and eaten in many places. For a Michelin star rated place, monastrell seems to be a complete miss on the food. We had a €70 per person tasting menu and it was off on most counts; their 'star' Iberico pork glazed with honey and cardamom tasted like cough mixture; their dessert was horrible. Only saving grace... More

Yes, it is an expensive restaurant but the service was excellent, the ambiance was nice, the food was delicious and the local vine was so good. I definitly recommend this place.

The range of dishes are, not too surprisingly, narrow and read easily enough- and in some ways expected and quite typical (at least in English version menu) but we avoided the Tasting Menu (at 75 euros p p plus wine) on the level of food it listed (maybe next time?) and so my wife and I went for a lamb...
