A Good Indian

It is rare to find a good Indian restaurant in predominently tourist villages and towns but this one is great offering a good choice at reasonable prices in comfortable surroundings. 20% discount for seatings before 6.30pm

The food here is lovely, cooked fresh and full of taste. However, we felt forgotten about - we had to wait a little while for drinks and over an hour for our food. I understand that because it is cooked fresh we'll need to wait a bit longer, but an hour is not acceptable. If the service could speed up,... More

Had previously been twice to this restaurant in summer 2015. Curries were good and reasonably priced. On the basis of this persuaded some friends to come with me over the Christmas Period. What a disappointment. Just about every course was very poor. They appologised for the Samosas which they said were not their usual ones "having been bought in". To... More

Visited early evening in the New Year and the place was pretty much deserted as you would expect apart from a couple sat at the bar. Very welcoming and friendly staff and as soon as we arrived, the fire was lit and lighting adjusted to suit us. Ordered starters which arrived in good time and it was obvious that everything... Amazing food. The waiting staff are sooo very funny!! During busy periods (as long as you are not in a rush!) sit back and enjoy the comedy and entertainment from Jamal.... his humor is quite unique!!.. we have all taken a shine to him and always look out for him as soon as we arrive in Beer!!.. He makes our... More

Great choice of food and were really helpful when I explained one of our party was gluten free. Service was slow, but they apologised and gave us a discount. Lovely food and LOADS of it. Restaurant was a bit cold though and serviettes need to go in the bin and be replaced-horrible nylon type! Very pleasant waiter serving drinks but... More

It must be tough keeping a curry restaurant open all year round in a Devon fishing village where tourism ebbs and flows with the seasons, The Spice Merchant manages it very well.Trade from the locals is not as brisk as you might imagine but the owner supports the community all year round with very high quality Indian cuisine as good... As regular visitors to the Spice Merchant we may be a little bias but we have tried all the other Indian Restaurant in the East Devon area and The Spice Merchant in Beer is by far the best. The owner will always "tweak" the menu for you if you would like something spiced up or down, the waiters are always... More

We tried the bhunas as takeaway to our nearby holiday let and whilst flavoursome just didn't have any heat in them! Garlic naan was odd too was a normal naan spread with butter and garlic rather than what you normally get baked in a garlic naan so very pungent and bit greasy maybe eating in is better or would certainly... The website suggests that on Tuesday,Wednesday,Thursday evenings you can enjoy a Spice Club meal for £9.95 however when we visited on a Thursday it was not available. the place was deserted ,dark and cold but they did light the fire for us .Food is ok but not really any different from hundreds of other Indian/Bangladeshi restaurants .Would we return?doubtful
