Excellent Sunday Lunch

An exceptionally good Sunday Lunch for 2 people accompanied by 2 dogs.We had 3 courses but really just the Roast would have been enough, luckily the dogs sat very quietly under the table and helped out. Mid week lunchtime visit in January to celebrate Birthday. Prawn tower and Pate for starters. Both opted for lamb shanks for mains followed by chocolate torte and homemade crumble. The standard of the food was very good. We liked the way the sweets were clearly labelled to indicate which were homemade. Service was ok. In the middle of winter the... More

This is a lovely pub with a warm welcome. The food is so tasty and nice that they use local produce. It's nice to be able to be in a pub where there was no blaring music and you could sit an chat without having to talk above the music. This is a must place to visit and love that... More

This is what we thought it was called. But it's not! A lovely find in the middle of a winter evening. Very old building with lots of character. Food was high standard.. We had the scotch egg to start which was pretty much perfect. Then the lamb shank and chilli followed by an Eton mess. All of it uncomplicated, quality... More

Despite living in North Devon for the past 7 years we only recently visited the Black Venus. Really sorry it took us so long. Food amazing, great service, friendly staff.

We had a wonderful meal at The Black Venus last night. Having been recommended to us by friends we made the 40 minute drive and arrived to a warm welcome! Tables can't be booked in advance so I was a little worried, but there was tables available and no wait. The food was AMAZING!! And the portion sizes more than... More

You can't go wrong with this place. Lovely old pub, and the food is always excellent. Consequently the restaurant can be popular, and you can't book a table. But they always try to accommodate you. Well worth a visit.

The reason we first visited the Black Venus was because it was within walking distance from our holiday cottage, but it has become a real favourite. It is a lovely country pub with a great menu using local food. Good roasts, pies and specials. The staff were all lovely and friendly. Even if you aren't staying in Challacombe it's worth... More

Came here for supper whilst staying at Keytisbury Grange lodges. Everyone choose something different and it arrived quickly and we all enjoyed the excellent food. I think the wining dish was the curry. Cant book so you need to arrive early

Spent New Year's eve at the Black Venus. Simply had a wonderful time with superb food. The pub was full and no wonder, given the excellent menu and quality of food. I would recommend this to anyone...absolutely fantastic!
