El Manantial is a macaw sanctuary, a conservation project dedicated to helping increase the native macaw population, with the idea of eventually releasing native macaws back into the wild. Destruction of key macaw habitats, particularly the deforestation of the mountain almond tree (Dipteryx panamensis), and the stealing of young birds for the black market, have severely reduced the Costa Rican macaw population. The El Manantial macaw sanctuary is located in Aranjuez, Puntarenas, and operates under the supervision of the Ministry of the Environment, Energy & Telecommunications (M.I.N.A.E.T) in agreement with the wildlife conservation laws of Costa Rica. El Manantial planted numerous native trees in the Sanctuary as a feeding source and shelter for the macaws in the wild. They work closely with local communities and schools in an ecotourism program to educate people about the importance of caring for each species and its habitat for the benefit of its habitants and the international community. El Manantial uses funding from this ecotourism program to develop its conservation resources (research, technology, food, medicine, veterinarians, etc.) and assure the quality of care and sustainability of the conservation project. El Manantial helps birds and animals that have suffered being extracted from their habitats by a human desiring to have the bird or animal as a pet or decoration. During the domestication process, the animals are in close proximity to their captors, resulting in the animals being caged, sometimes for their entire lives. This is the easiest solution for the humans to keep them, but it is by no means the best solution for the animals. less
