  "Shosuke-no-Yado is the first inn you see when you take the turnoff to Higashiyama Onsen from the road out of Aizu Wakamatsu. Higashiyama Onsen is an area of great natural beauty, but the inns along the river are in varied condition. Some appear much in need of improvement, as are the riverside walks...". The owners of Shosuke no Yado, which we gathered has been there for a long time, have undertaken a thorough renovation, and apparently a recent expansion. The result is a tasteful, glitz-free blend of the traditional and contemporary. Our room was very new, and beautifully designed. Although the inn is quite large, we seemed to be alone with a green view of the wooded hillside across the river, and the peaceful sound of running water. On our balcony, reached through a high-tech shower alcove, was a small pristine bath of scented hinoki wood, so we could enjoy our own private rotenburo (outdoor bath), lantern-lit, as well as the large baths for men and women downstairs, which overlook a cas... For anyone familiar with the 'onsen' culture, it allows for usual, decadent routine of 'soak, eat, sleep and repeat'. The rooms and premise are very nicely furnished. You can tell they did it on a budget, but the rooms are really smartly designed and very comfy all around. For the area that still suffers from 3.11, they could really use more visitors, so come support them. Also a must is a side visit to Kita to the Urushi Bijutsu Hakubutsukan - Japanese lacquer museum that had to relocate to a much smaller space post 3.11.
