Normally in Italy this would be an invitation to skimp on the heating and the breakfast offering. We were happily surprised that the rooms and the common rooms were well heated and the large fruit offering and breads at breakfast would have left much to be thrown away. For me this shows the great generosity and unwillingness to compromise which ultimately is what special hosting is about. 2 a three minutes walk from the hotel, up the hill is a beautiful castle which was the family residence of Cavour, one of the most important founding fathers of Italy.   "My wife and I stayed 3 nights in the Marcarini apartment. After 3 weeks of travelling through Northern Italy and staying at some very nice apartments, this was easily the best. Wonderfully appointed, clean and comfortable. Great location off the beaten track, surrounded by grape vines and beautiful ..."idyllic countryside. The staff (Elisa) was an absolute gem! She helped us with appointments to wineries, restaurants and local sights. Nothing was too much trouble. Breakfast was plentiful and delicious as there was always some freshly baked cakes from the region. For those on the Italian wine trail there are some excellent vineyards to see in the Barbaresco and Barolo areas. The Marcarini cellars on the top of La Morra provided the most spectacular views of the valley and some very nice wines. If you want to see the Gaja winery in Barbaresco, you'll need to book a month in advance! Also try Carlo Giacosa, great full bodied wines.
