I very much enjoyed my arrival experience, and even my parents who don't pay much attention to architecture were wow-ing to simple yet warm interiors. However, the modern and clean design created many obstacles especially to my parents who are in early 70's to fully enjoy this ryokan. There is hardly any signs here, no room numbers or bath names. Your room door blends in with the adjacent wall and there is no knob on the door. It took them sometime to find the right door to knock whenever they left for a bath.   "I was here back in September and meant to write about it then but forgot. I came here mainly for the architecture, by Kengo Kuma, one of the great designers in the world today, and found a wonderful building staffed by wonderful caring people. The exterior of the building has a simple elegance, but ..."the real treat is inside: it's one of the most beautiful domestic interiors I've ever seen, the 1.3 million bamboo slats filter the light beautifully, as does the green handmade glass in the front wall, so the lobby glows with a gorgeous light. The rooms are simple and elegant, beautifully designed, the floating staircases -- a Kuma signature -- lovely and sculptural, and the handmade paper on the walls and polished wood on the floors create a warm and inviting feeling. The food was excellent, both breakfast and dinner, and the service by the hotel staff always friendly and expert. The five baths are the most beautiful onsen baths I've seen, I tried them all and was reluctant to leave them. ... " More >

  "We live in Tokyo and went there for a 1-day trip from Tokyo by train (Yamagata shinkansen, 3.5 hours) and the view from the train was incredible (snow-covered fields and mountains). The hotel has a free shuttle service from the closest train station. The "village" is small but really beautiful, e..."specially under the snow. The architecture by Kengo Kuma is worth the trip by itself. Food was great (very traditional kaiseki-style dinner and Japanese breakfast). Not much to see but the place is absolutely perfect for relaxing, reading, enjoying the baths and dining. There are 5 different private baths in the hotel, which is perfect for enjoying bath with travelling companion only (usually not the case in normal baths). One of the bath is semi-outdoor, which is a great experience when the place is surrounded by snow !
