Stayed here in Oct 2013 and have only just got 'round to writing my reviews. I phoned to try to book about 2 weeks before I stayed and spoke to a lady who was finishing as landlady in two days and couldn't book me in because she wasn't sure that it would be trading when I got there! About a... More

Bowes itself is a fantastic little village. The castle is also worth a visit. My wife and I passed through on The Pennine Way and decided to stay at this hotel. The rooms were in a seperate building across the courtyard. They were quite small and the furniture was very worn and It wasn't all that comfortable either. The breakfast... More

I visited the Ancient Unicorn when I was on a date recently, meeting up with my partner at the pub. The room I had was one of those laid out around the courtyard which was ideal for my purposes and did not have to be accessed through the pub itself. I was visiting on a Wednesday night so it was... I could not fault the hosts. They were friendly and attentive. The food was fantastic. Great breakfast. Unfortunately all their efforts cannot detract the tired rooms. Everything in the room felt damp. The towels, the bedding; everything. My partner complained vociferously about the mattress. I slept on the spare quilt on the mattress which made it reasonably comfortable. The bathroom had... More

Hosts unavailable on our early arrival from our days Pennine Walk but key and room left ready for us. The room in the former stable block, was basic but clean, bright and comfy. Great hot shower. Bathroom a little tired but more than adequate. I'm sure Bowes had been busier in the past than now so difficult to expect too... More

We arrived here after a long day's walk on the Pennine Way. It was very nice to enjoy a proper shower in a very clean bathroom after a sweaty day! Our rooms were good, but I would especially like to recommend the food: both dinner and breakfast were great, and there were several vegetarian options available. It's also nice to... More

On arrival I found a note on the window at reception apologising that they were not available to welcome me personally, but identifying which room I was in (across the courtyard) and that my key was in the door. This was good, since I had arrived early and wasn't sure if I would have to wait outside. When I later... More

Thank you ! This was a one night stop after a day of hard travel to get here. I was pretty exhausted , but nothing was too much trouble for the staff. It was warm , great food and a real home. Some of the decor was a bit tired but all the things that mattered were excellent . The... More

Blown up the A1 by the wind that increased in ferocity throughout the day which resulted in a very noisy night, but the welcome and the food more than made up for that. The rooms may be a bit dated, but it was comfortable, the water was hot and I was made to feel very welcome. It's a 16th century... More
