Howard's lodge had all the basic essentials you need for a hiking trip. Clean and convenient place to stay. Can give spa a miss - it malfunctioned and smelt very strongly of chlorine. Otherwise very good value for money.

Unfortunately, we got in late after a long day of driving. The gentleman who greeted us was either tired or annoyed that he had to accommodate us at this time (9:30/10pm). We inquired about food and he pretty much told us we were out of luck since everything closes early. We were lucky and a place around the corner was... More

You were very lucky to find somewhere open at that hour. As people get up early for mountain activities the general rule for restaurants is 9pm at the latest. I wasn't trying to be unhelpful, just realistic. Our advie for the hike is that Mt Ngarahoe (which you wanted to climb) is not a good option. It isn't that interesting... More

This is a good basic lodge for the tourists. We stayed for two nights, and hiked the Tongariro crossing (lodge can arrange the transport). There is free wifi (some limit on data). We stayed in a double room, which was basic but perfectly fine for our purposes. There is a kitchen downstairs if you need to cook.

We stayed for a couple of nights in the hope of doing the Tongariro crossing. The staff were great in communicating the weather conditions and helping us decide whether to attempt the walk or not. As it turned out, we didn't do the walk but were still given our substantial and delicious packed lunch, maps and pointed in the direction... More

The lodge reminds me of a hostel. They have kitchen facilities and transport to the alpine crossing/skiing. The rooms are standard like you would expect at a budget hotel. You only get 100mb/3 days free wifi. They offer breakfast for 15$ pp, which was decent.

Location is perfect and the hosts are extremely helpful. Do not expect luxuries as it is more hikers oriented, but services are good. Stayed a night in a double room with private bathroom, the bed was confortable and the pillows were the best ones we slept on for our whole month travelling in NZ!! No hair -dryer, only downside to... More

The Tongariro Xing Package made everything hassle free and super easy, with transport, lunch and breakfasts included! Comfortable and clean accomodation. Great location. Friendly hosts. Recommend to those wanting value for money.

Glad to hear you had a good stay with us and experience of the crossing. Event he weather it seems co-operated which isn't always the case and you were wise to allow an extra day to allow for that possibility. More

Stayed in one of the standard double rooms for a few nights while we did some family summer activities around the National park region. The room was very basic (as expected), but clean and tidy. The beds were a little tired, but still comfortable. We were in the rooms that didn't have en suites so had to use the shared... More

This is an extremely basic place to stay, it is more like a hostel rather than a "lodge" as advertised. We paid for the delux package which provided myself and my husband a queen room with private shower and toilet,2 breakfasts, very basic bland lunch and bus transfers to the crossing. The single one good thing I can say is... More

Sorry you didn't have the best time here but I have to say you are quite wrong about sound proofing. I have slept in every room of the lodge and the walls are proofed. That said, when we are full there are another 70 plus people here and they will make noise and do things which I would agree are... More

Great place to stay for a hassle free Tongariro Mountain Crossing. Grant was helpful and friendly. The accommodation was functional and extremely clean. Breakfast and the crossing transfers worked like clockwork. The lunch provided was basic but very welcome during the hike. Grant had extra gear if we needed it (the walking poles in particular are highly recommended).

The right equipment does make all the difference. Unfortunately there is still a section of people who think they can just 'get by' with what they have and so have a less than perfect experience. The right footwear, rain wear, sun protection and yes walking poles make all the difference. Hope to see you again soon. More
