National park is the closest village if you want to do the tongariro crossing. This hostel is a really nice one, in the spirit of hostel, most of the travellers are alone but everybody is hanging out together. Hopefully there is a fire in the kitchen. Heat in the rooms. Beds comfortable. Staff nice and helpful, they will arrange the... More

My wife & I stayed here for 2 nights in April 2014. I can honestly say that I am disappointed the YHA and Hi-Hostel certified this place. We stayed at five other YHA hostels in New Zealand and this one definitely had the lowest quality. We have also stayed at Hi Hostels in Iceland, Canada, and the USA; all of... More

I stayed at YHA National Park for two nights while doing to Tongariro Crossing. I let reception know that I was going to arrive late on Friday night (10:30) so they made sure someone was there to help check me in. I stayed in a 10 bed dorm which was just fine. The bunks are a bit weird though, as... More

A place I would come back to, helpful staff a nice pub next door. Not far to the Chateau you can organize your Tongariro crossing from this YHA weather pending or the Ruaphue walk. There is a inside climbing room for the those of days. Petrol is expansive at National Park better to go to Ratahi or similar.

The location is fine, there isn't really anything in the area though. The bed set up is odd (in the 10 bed dorm you have to climb over another persons bed to get to two of the higher bunks). Staff is ok. Wifi is $5 a day. Room gets hot at night, especially if your in a top bunk away... More

After booking rooms with this YHA they booked us a $30pp shuttle to/from the Tongariro Alpine Crossing through National Park Backpackers (looks to be the same company). As we were boarding the bus, the host 'Karen' told us we were not allowed on the bus without rain jackets. Looking at the weather forecast, and from previous hiking experience, we decided... More

Extremely friendly staff at the front desk. I stayed for 3 nights and the staff answered all of my (many) questions. Also, they aren't out to nickel and dime you at all. The facilities are clean as well.

Stayed here as closest access to Tongariro Crossing. Cosy hostel. Basic but fine. Had a twin room with ensuite - great and in a quiet wing. Big, bustling communal kitchen. Pub, small supermarket, cafe and restaurant nearby (max 10 min walk). Provide $30 bus to and from the Tongariro Crossing. They check weather first thing in morning to determine safety... More

Maybe i should write this a bit later because i am a bit pissed off at the moment. I will try to make this polite and informative. Having slept in the car and tent for the last 10 days i was looking forward to a good bed and a hot shower. On the phone i booked for the cheapest dorm... More

Hello, Sorry for a delayed response, I remember your stay: you did arrive around 9 am for check in, which is of no problem. However cleaning is done between 9am – 1pm. Unfortunately you retired to your room before the cleaning process was complete. We would have happily supplied you with toilet paper if you have informed us that the... More

17. National Park Backpackers – When we finally finished the Tongariro Alpine Crossing (including summit of Mt Ngauruhoe) the bed and breakfast in Waitomo did not answer the phone to confirm we’d have a room if we got in late. As such, we were forced to find other accommodation and had our first experience staying at a hostel. Paid roughly... More
