Our ensuite room was huge, clean and with a lot of light through its big windows. On the other hand it was rather basic: the mattress of our double bed was OK but nothing more, there was only one chair for the two of us, and nothing, not even a nail, on the wall from which one might hang clothes.... If you need a break, in a quiet, clean environment. Then National Park is a great place. And the YHA National Park, with its many climbing walls, is the place to stay. The atmosphere is very relaxed, and the staff are brilliant. For a backpackers, this is one of the better ones I have stayed in. It may not be... More

Stayed at the hostel four nights in the month of December. Some staff were friendly. Facilities were very clean and the kitchen convenient. However what ruined our stay was the poor quality of the matresses available. We had three different rooms over our stay and I ended up sleeping on the floor on my camping mattress one night because the... More

Stayed here to do the Tongariro crossing. This was rubbish. Stay at Ohakune ten mileage away, the quality of the hostel is an order of magnitude better. The staff at NP are a little peculiar and its sole purpose is to provide Tongariro accommodation and transport. There is an indoor climbing wall but it is rubbish and expensive, so utterly... More

The staff here could not do enough to help me with preparing for doing the Tongariro crossing. They were really friendly and welcoming. There is lots of equipment that they have to hire, which was so useful. They also run the shuttle bus service. My room was amazing due to the stunning view I had; it was clean, comfortable and... Nice hostel, clean and friendly staff. Quiet location but local amenities available (garage shop and local pub), and not too far from the start of the crossing. The hostel booked my shuttle to get me to and from the crossing. The bedroom had lots of space, (though it wasn't fully booked). Good location if you're getting the train to or... More

Before my trip even began, the staff here were great about promptly responding to my e-mails with questions regarding the YHA itself and the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. Once I'd arrived, they continued to be helpful in getting my Internet sorted, recommending nearby activities to fill the day, and giving seasoned local advice on when not to attempt the Tongariro crossing.... YHA National Park is memorable & cozy to me. I find the rooms spacious and warm. It is way affordable for backpacking and not really crowded when I was there. Kitchen, toilet and facilities are tolerable compared to other backpackers lodge meaning it's conducive to stay. It's also close to some shops & the national park railway station. There's a... More

Have used many times over the years and have always found the staff very helpful, the rooms in excellent condition and always warm. The staff are full of knowledge on other activities if the mountain is closed. Awesome indoor climbing wall fully equipped. Extra gear on site if needed for your tramping activities. Two very clean and appointed kitchens. Simply... More

Went to stay here in July 2014 for 3 days and 2 nights. The National Park Backpackers (also written as YHA National Park) is undoubtedly one of the most gorgeous backpackers I've went to, very classic and cabin like... From the outside. The extra points for this hostel would be the staffs. They are very VERY friendly, so the rate... More
