The best place to stay for a family experiance, great staff, option for a meal at the resturant. Closest place to the start of the Tongerero Crossing including the "first" morning drop off so you start ahead of the hoards.

We stayed in the basic cabin, for $60 for one night. The location is brilliant with great views of the National Park, it is a short drive to the nearby town. The basic cabin is wooden with a double bed/ bunk bed. Quite small so only share if you know the others well :) The toilet block/ communal area is... More

We stayed here for a couple of nights while travelling from Wellington to Auckland in order to take the opportunity to do some skiing locally at Whakapapa. This was an ideal base. We stayed in a cabin with great views of the mountains and it met all our needs. It was clean, well resourced and warm and cosy when heated.... More

Great location. We were upgraded to a different room. Jed is Superman doing many different jobs and always pleasant and helpful. The rooms are older but very clean and well cared for. The grounds are well cared for. The remote location does not have Wifi but for me that is part of the charm, my teenage daughter may disagree on... More

First of all, the communication has opportunity to improve: Only two days before our stay, we got a mail (that we did not access in that time) saying that our crossing transport was cancelled as well as our lunch packet (+no restaurant) due our stay being off season, as the website indicates. Well, if it was that obvious - you... More

Firstly, we chose Discovery Lodge as they are very close to the start of the Crossing and operate the first bus in the morning, so you can get a head start before the crowds. They also have regular pick ups in the afternoon from the end of the track. This means you don't have to worry about getting to the... More

My family and I stayed once again at Discovery. Its been some years since our last stay and the owners and also Jed who took our booking were very hospitable and welcoming. I stayed many years ago in the Camping huts and had also stayed in the studio motel room. We stayed in the Motel room with separate bedroom this... More

My friend and I stayed here primarily because it offered a return transfer to the Tongariro Crossing starting point at a very affordable rate. When we reached there, we knew we made a very good decision to stay there as it was a very nice place. The view of Mount Ruapehu from afar was just magical at dawn, morning, noon... More

We stayed at Discovery Lodge twice, in February of both 2013 and 2014. Our decision to come the second time was based on the positive experience from our first visit. We stayed in a motel room both times. The staff is friendly and very helpful. The room in which we stayed was spacious with a comfy bed and a kitchenette.... More

Stayed one night in March (supposed to be two but dual flat tires nixed that). 5 Stars on communication pre-stay, arranging for trail transport and food. Discovery Lodge is a great base from which to do hiking in the area – their early shuttle option to Tongariro is recommended depending on the day of the week. The chalets are in... More
