We stayed in one of the chalets for two nights in July. The room was cozy and modern and had great views of the mountains. We ate in the restaurant the first night and enjoyed the hearty food and great service. All of the staff were very friendly, genuine and knowledgable about the area. This was really helpful, especially for... More

Our experience here was great, though not necessarily typical since we were tenting on their back lawn, and only used their bathrooms and cooking area. The lady at the front desk was very good to us, and was genuinely concerned that we be prepared for the night (it snowed). The facilities were clean and spacious, we survived the cold, and... More

We stayed here in March 2015 to do the Tongariro Alpine Crossing day trip. The location is great, nice and close to the start of the crossing, and the shuttle you can book in gets you to the start of the walk nice and early and offers multiple pick-up times. We stayed in a motel room, this was an average... More

We stayed at Discovery the night before doing the Tongariro Crossing and I'm SO glad we did. The room was simple, slightly outdated but not in an extreme way. Everything was clean and comfortable. Staying here and then taking the shuttle was our best decision - we were able to wake up with enough, get dressed and hop on the... More

My husband and I stayed here for 1 night in March in a backpackers lodge. We had a tight schedule whilst in NZ so we emailed a few months in advance to book the room and shuttle service. Unfortunately we arrived at 5.15 ready for the 1st shuttle after travelling an hour to get there and were told there were... More

Discovery Lodge offered cosy accommodation, the room was warm and cosy when we arrived at midnight. The staff left special instructions out for us to make sure we were prepared. The friendly staff made us feel welcome and tokk a lot of care providing information about the Tongariro crossing. The shuttle drivers were super friendly, along with the lodge staff.... More

We stayed 2 nights, before and after doing the Tongariro Crossing. The location and service can't be faulted. They offer a pickup and drop off shuttle for the Crossing which is run very efficiently and highly recommended. We stayed in the cheapest cabins being all that was available and I couldn't really recommend them in good faith. The bed was... More

Great location for doing the crossing--a 10 minute bus ride to the start and a 30 minutes ride back at the end of the day. They run a shuttle service to the start and a pickup service in the afternoon. Very efficient--they said they would leave at 545AM and they did--by the way the sun did not rise until at... More

We stayed there because of doing the Tongariro track. But other than its location to that track, it is nothing special. Very run-down bathrooms and communal area. Come on...update the kitchen and toilets/showers a little. However, the shuttle service was reliable and it did get us on the trail way before the crowds so that was really the only plus.
