My family traveled to Costa Rica last August and one thing that we really wanted to do was see a quetzal. We stayed at El Toucanet Lodge in Copey and were not disappointed. First of all, the lodge is beautiful and well-maintained. It is situated in one of the most picturesque valleys in Costa Rica. The view from our room... More

High in the coffee country above Santa Maria the El Toucanete Lodge is a dream getaway, We had a junior suite that included breakfasts and gourmet, super healthy dinners by an Argentine chef named Paula. Gary and Edna are the proprietors and couldn't be nicer. Gary took us on an early morn walk and we SAW A QUETZAL - A... More

This seems like the perfect place to rest and relax. It's small and quite. Food is excellent. Rooms are rustic, but very clean, and the Hosts are ready to help and answer any question you may have. The view from any of the rooms is excellent due to it's location at the base of the hill. From there you can... More

Not much to add to what others have written. Just the basics: Pros: + Nice, rustic experience (Expect a cabin and you won't be disappointed) + Cabins have a nice porch and views + Dinner and breakfast were really pretty good. + Good chance to see quetzals on the main road + Cool mountain air makes for a great sleep... . . . then Gary and Edna have the place for you. We were turned on to this place by some of our own guests who really enjoyed their stay some weeks before. We could only stay a night but the next morning after a delicious fresh trout dinner we took a walk with Gary and soon found a nesting... More

We are a two couples who stayed at El Toucanet for three nights which was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. The lodge is locally owned and the cabins are modern, very clean and comfortable. Wonderful Costa Rican hospitality by Gary and Edna and very tasty cuisine. The birding begins out side your window and there are a varuety of habitats to... More

We came for a couple of days - and wound up staying for a week - lovely Lodge, VERY helpful hosts, great food - everyone was so friendly, even the owners' dogs! Highly recommend! We had one of the junior suites - nice amenities, good view of the hills.

El Toucanet Lodge provides a microcosm of what Costa Rica has to offer in the way of the natural environment, its wildlife (most especially birds), inspiring yet strangely relaxing scenery, and lovely people who really do look after their guests. We were part of a small Audubon group, so of course we focused on the birds. And there were many... More

Absolutely worth the 8 km dirt road drive off the main road to San Jose! We stayed four nights in this peaceful rural setting in late January, 2013. As everyone has noted, Gary and Edna are friendly, gracious hosts who made everything welcoming and easy for us. The food was excellent, the quetzal's cooperative (we saw a beautiful male and... We stayed there our first night in Costa Rica and it was amazing. You have a lovely room with your own balcony overlooking the beautifal mountains. It's very peaceful. And I must say that the food was absolutely delicious! In the morning we went for the 'quetzal'walk with Gary as guide and we were lucky ones because we saw two... More
