Lovely small hotel, friendly and welcoming staff. I was here for less than 12 hours, and didn't even eat breakfast as I was leaving too early !! Modern clean rooms, with an enormous shower. Its tricky to find, although the address is the High street, its actually behind Cafe Rouge, so drive past CR, and hang a right at the... More

This is not a large place, but the location in the middle of Berkhamsted makes it very convenient. Like most UK hotels the rooms are not huge, but you also do not step into the wall when getting out of bed. I would go again. Parking at the back is very convenient and safe!

I stayed last week at the Pennyfarthing as my usual hotel was full. I was a bit ambivalent about the hotel after reading the reviews on Tripadvisor as some people seem to have a strange view on what makes a good hotel. However the room was fine and well appointed. Bathroom only had a shower but had lots of towels... More

Quite disappointed. Profiled as a high end hotel we spent that little bit extra which unfortunately didn't reach our expectation. The room was decorated well but very small! You couldn't even sit straight in the loo! You had to sit sideways. Missing condiments in the room and a very very poor breakfast. With what I can only describe as a... More

Hi Carolyne, I’m really sorry that your stay here at the Penny Farthing did not live up to our usually high standards. As the building dates back to the 16th century, when it was used to accommodate religious guests making their way to the monastery at Ashridge, some of the rooms are a little smaller than the others. I’m sorry... More

Reception nice and a cute looking place. Bedrooms look nice and are furnished nicely. Bathroom is very chic. However, I moved one pillow and there was a long black hair. So took closer look and pillow cases were not pristine - they may have been washed, but if they had been, they were stained. Then I checked to see if... More

We stayed here for our friend's 40th party. They kindly put a gift and message in our room for our friend and continued to be lovely for the whole stay. The ladies on reception were incredibly helpful when we went out and very sweet. Comfy room and parking. (We struggled to find the place at first, it's behind the Cafe... More

We stayed for a couple of nights recently and found the hotel. Staff. Breakfast etc excellent. Would Definately recommend it to other guests We ate in the kings arms restaurant both nights and enjoyed the food very much. Although there are lots of choices on restaurants near the hotel as it's pretty centrally located

We stayed here to be near to a wedding to which we had been invited. The room was ok but nothing special. It was a small room lacking any decoration with a bathroom which was impractical (for example a difficult higned glass panel to the bath). The view was pathetic in that the two windows to the room looked onto... More

Hi David, We’re really sorry to hear that your stay did not live up to our usually high standard. Unfortunately, as the building dates back to the 16th Century where it was originally used as accommodation for religious guests passing through Berkhamsted or on to Ashridge Monastery, the rooms can vary in size. For example, the rooms in the lower... More

Stayed last night for one night only. The usual accessories expected in an hotel of this price, bottled water, shower gel and tissues, for example, were missing. Breakfast was a shambles, served in the most basic of rooms. We ordered our cooked breakfasts and waited an hour to receive close to what we'd ordered after 3 total incorrect attempts! Our orders were taken... More

Hi CaseykPooleDorset, I am incredibly shocked and concerned by this review. I can only apologise for the fact that your room was not equipped with these basic necessities. This is most definitely a mistake on our part; we have just employed a whole new team who were put in charge of dressing the rooms on the night of your stay.... More
