We stayed at Cerro Lodge for two nights in January. The rooms are in separate bungalows and are basic, but clean and comfortable. A ceiling fan keeps things (relatively) cool. The open-air bathroom has a bamboo fence for privacy and plants growing inside. It is a delight to shower there. There was an iguana on the bamboo when we arrived,... More

We were 3 Brits visiting for the birdwatching, but we hadn't reckoned with the heat and humidity - perhaps because we'd come from Monte Verde where it was cool. We struggled in the middle of the day, and thought longingly of air-conditioned hotels ... but everything else about the lodge and bungalows was lovely (except that you need cash to... More

Cerro Lodge is a little haven for anyone interested in birds. You don't even have to leave their garden to see them - obviously it depends on luck and timing, but one day we even had 14 Scarlet Macaws in one go. The rooms are beautiful, with large beds, ceiling fans and a lovely screened but open air bathroom area.... More

We stayed here for three nights in December, nice cabins, great setting, reasonably close to the park, overall very good. Ideally you'd get here by hire car, but it can be done by bus, just take one to Tarcoles Bridge and arrange for a taxi which will be $10-$20 depending on the driver. You can buy lunch and dinner here... More

As others have reported, what you see is what you get (a good thing). I was cool enough without a/c (two good ceiling fans in cabin). I did get some bug bites, probably due to the open air bathroom; but I knew what to expect. The birding from the restaurant porch was great--even without the fruit feeders. The highlight was... More

This is an out of the way hotel - no doubt about it. You won't hear traffic and will most definitely see birds, insects, and lizards. Make no bones about it - this is a primative hotel in the sense that there isn't any A/C - in July that does make it rather roasty toasty as there is no way... More

What you see on their website is exactly what you get...there are no surprises here, which is a huge plus in my book! We only stayed one night but Federico set up a tour of Carara for us and is extremely helpful in advance planning through email. Overall, if you like the description on the website (this is not a... Cerro Lodge was an amazing, unique and picturesque true cabana setting. We only had time for one night, and I am glad we made the journey. I loved the grounds, meals (breakfast and dinner), views and cool outdoor bathrooms! I would have loved to have been able to stay here at least two nights. I would have taken a day... More

Cerro Lodge is my favorite place to stay in the area around Tarcoles, and certainly the best for its value. Lodging in the area is, in general, very limited; so Cerro Lodge is an easy pick as it has excellent service, rustic but comfortable rooms, great views, and a sense of solitude you can't find in nearby Jaco. I've encountered... More

We stayed three nights at Cerro Lodge. The lodge is located on a farm, so the setting is pastoral rather than tropical, but there are birds galore (including scarlet macaws). Except for Federico, the owner, the staff doesn't really speak English, but they were patient and kind with our limited Spanish, and took very good care of us. The room... More
