Gladstone’s Library was founded by Victorian Statesman, William Ewart Gladstone (1809-1898), arguably Britain's greatest Prime Minister, and the most significant Anglican lay person of the last two centuries. Gladstone, a millionaire, lived in the Castle in the village of Hawarden in North Wales, just a few miles from Chester. This is the site of St Deiniol's Library which Gladstone founded... More

Thoughtful kitchen staff good with allergies. Library good on period politics, social conditions, the Christian faith and there is a new small Islamic reading room. Mattresses in some rooms may too hard for some. Generally a very relaxing place. Some Christian pastoral support. A glass of wine available with lunch or evening meal, and there is a pub across the... More

My sister and I just returned from a fabulous holiday at Gladstone Library. We were in Wales doing geneology research on our grandfather who was born in Wales. I loved the whole experience. The accommodation was great, the staff was friendly and helpful and the food was fabulous. I can't say enough about it and will definitely return. Thanks to... More

Stayed here for 2 nights whilst on business in the area. Lovely room, was a refreshing change not to have a television in the room as most places do. Good breakfast.

this is my fourth visit over the last two years and it feels like coming home - friendly staff, great food, comfortable rooms, good facilities and a magnificent library. A wonderful place to relax, study and research.

What a great discovery! Fantastic Victorian hostelry, just like an exclusive London gentleman's club (only with ladies too)! Soaked in history dripping with charm. The rooms have been recently upgraded and are now VERY comfortable - if small - with WI-fi and all mod cons. We were full board and the meals were good with plenty of choice and its... More

This was a business stay tagged on the end of a trip to the Lake District. We stopped as we headed back down south. I wonder if there are other such hidden gems around the UK? My partner and I took a double room en-suite ("study bedroom" in their parlance) for one night. Fittings whilst dated were four-star and comfortable,... More

This must be the only library with accommodation on the planet. The cost is comparable to many B & B's, but the Gladstone includes dinner! It is unique, as the other reviewers have already described so well. I will add that there is a nice pub right across the road, too, with some nice real ales. I had a good... More

Gladstone's is a welcoming haven for scholars, clergy, and travelers who want a unique, comfortable, and restful experience. One wing of the property is the Library, where people write, read, and think--the other is the hospitality wing with kitchen and dining room, common room, and bedrooms, many with en-suite bathrooms. I've spent a total of two months there in the... More
