Shoal Bay Estate and Great Barrier Island exceeded my expectations of this island only 25 minutes from Auckland. The owners were very helpful and hospitable and the breakfasts were legendary! We were there three mornings and each morning there were new homemade breakfast delights. Shoal Bay is a very sheltered bay and the Estate looks out over it - they... More

Spent 3 days at Shoal Bay Estate with a group of friends. Val & Francis are fantastic hosts and nothing was too much trouble. Breakfasts were substantial and if you choose to have dinner there then you will not leave hungry. Great Barrier is simply stunning and with Shoal Bay renting cars and kayaks you have no excuse for not... More

Spent a wonderful weekend here for my husbands birthday with our 2 teenage kids. The rooms were lovely overlooking the bay which we kayaked around. So peaceful with nice hosts and good food. Felt totally at home here, very relaxing.....

Val and Francis are brilliant hosts. Friendly and relaxed despite being super busy when I visited (weekend of the garden tours). Great Barrier Island is such a special place and Shoal Bay is a magical little corner to spend time in. Lovely gardens. Free range chooks. Kaka everywhere! Val and Francis at warm and generous people - only too happy... More

Good hosts, very accommodating, and a nice room. Handy to have a hire car from the same place. We had one dinner with them and it was nice. It a good place to explore Great Barrier Island from. Great three days.

Val and Francis are the most hospitable and friendliest hosts, they certainly made us feel welcome in their home. They had a brilliant knowledge of the Island and great tips of things to do and see (Kaitoke Hot Springs is a must do!) We had dinner with them one night – Val is an amazing cook – so recommend you... More

Lovely home away from home. Top notch hosts. Pick up from airport. Able to hire a car for exploring the island. Very well fed. Lodge spacious, welcoming, clean and tidy. Val and Francis were fabulous hosts - very accommodating. Loved listening to their stories over meals. Definitely return during a summer so we can explore further, fish and kayak. Very... More

Val and Francis are fabulous hosts. We stayed in the cottage for 5 nights and had a wonderful time. The accommodation is clean and comfortable, we took advantage of the car hire and explored the island. Val and Francis helped arrange and great fishing trip with Wayne, who was also very helpful with 4 novice fisher women! Would thoroughly recommend,... More
