Me and my girlfriend during our traveling in Japan had heard ryokans must be experinced, this place really gives a true genuine feeling of being in Japanese culture:) the atmosphere is truly peaceful, with the koi fish pond, the beatifull gardens, the quiet surroundings and staff being so nice, absolutely worth it

Location is a distance from the train station, you will need to take a taxi. Although there is a bus goes towards the hotel direction, it is still a walk from the bus-stop. There are some shops and restaurants around the areas, but be prepared many closed after 7.00 pm. This is a traditional Japanese ryokan experience, service was very... More

Nice as a traditional Japanese ryokan experience but the hot baths are not impressive, and probably a more authentic experience would be to go the pubic baths outside the hotel. Service however was very good and attentive (no English though) and the food was very good. All in all a nice experience but I would not rush there, and definitely... More

A beautiful Ryokan in the little termal town of Shuzenji, the Arai is perfect to relax in the middle of your trip. Our room had a private bath with thermal water, but there is also a beautiful open air bath, and some indoor ones. You can also reserve a private bath, perfect for two people. An inner garden with ponds... More

Arai Ryokan is located just outside the center of Shuzenji and is therefore accessible only by car or taxi . However, the remote location also ensures plenty of silence and recovery : no car noise, just the sound of the river that flows next to the ryokan. The area is very extensive : Our room was located on the first... More

I hate to be a naysayer, but my friend and I found the place to be underwhelming. The staff was great, location excellent and food wonderful. The structure itself, however, has seen much better days and needs a lot of TLC. The most recent updating in terms of plumbing, etc., appears to have been from the 1960's or 70's and is... More

This was probably the most wonderful single overnight stay my wife and I have had in 30 years of traveling together. This place is everything it says it is and more. The pictures are beautiful and unbelievable, but they just don't do justice to the place. How can a 2-dimensional photo get across what it's like to sit in an... More

I was here one night with my husband, and we truly enjoyed our stay. The service is five star, there is an specific attendant who'd serve you throughout the stay. Both dinner and breakfast are excellent. The building is historical, which means the decor and the onsens are old. Internet are available in the lobby only, and it's slow. But... More

Stayed here on honeymoon and it was truly stunning. The building itself is amazing, intricate gardens, ponds, streams and lovely trees in a fantastic location next to the river and opposite the bamboo walk. Had a private onsen in the room and within the grounds had some amazing onsens, including a private small and large family one, traditional and outdoor... More
