We stayed in Botiza for a week in May. The guest house is clean and spacious. Accommodation is all on the first floor, with three rooms, a central lounge area and a couple of bathrooms. We had the whole floor to ourselves so we enjoyed plenty of space. The balcony running around two sides of the building is a great place to sit and relax. Meals are taken in the delightful traditional summer house surrounded by beautiful locally woven rugs and wall hangings. The food is wonderful - traditional, plentiful and tasty. George is just the perfect guide. He is well-read, kind, thoughtful, sensitive and very knowledgable. His English (German and French) is excellent and he accompanied us throughout our time in the area - we could not possibly have enjoyed it as much without him. Botiza is delightful. There are plenty of walks to adjoining villages across the hills. There are three bars, we liked the one with raised decking and lots of lovely flowers all set behind a low fence (no idea if it has a name). The villages and UNESCO churches in the area are a joy to visit, as are the markets, distilleries, rug-makers, blacksmiths... The people have a 'peasant lifestyle' and it was haymaking time during our visit. We learned much about how this way of life has changed little over the centuries and how, without chemicals, using horses instead of tractors, this life-style allows space for nature and people to thrive. The fields are bursting with flowers, butterflies and bugs - it's like stepping into a Thomas Hardy novel.

George was extremely hospitable, even though he did not have a room himself he put us up with very accommodating friends in the village. They had a very clean and spacious room, but above all very nice breakfast and dinners. George showed us around, a true expert on the Maramures County and its traditions, we collected mushrooms together and hiked, ignoring the rain. Thanks again George!

We have stayed a week with George and his wife in Botiza, Northern Transilvania. George is an excellent speaking guide ....English and German certainly , and having being born and living I the area all his life he is very informative and has shown us some wonderful places. His knowledge of the locals, their traditions and the people themselves is truly amazing. The food his wife Mirella cooks is plentiful and excellent quality.....she has even shared a recipe with me. We have visited lots of decorated churches, local markets and crafts---even saw a local wedding.

We stayed in Botiza with George based on his excellent reviews. George was fantastic at communicating before hand and really easy going when we changed our dates. Thank you! We turned up and his place was easy to find. We could park in his driveway too, George's guesthouse is above his house and very modern. He made sure we were well looked after and the bed was very comfortable. George gave us some great advice on the area, organised fantastic, huge meals for dinner and breakfast in a little traditional hut, which was lovely. Dinners started with palinka or home brewed liquor which I loved, and we were treated to three course meals. Tip: Come hungry! After dinner we went for walks around town and had a lovely time conversing with locals (in broken romanian/english), who sit outside their houses in the fading light around 8-9pm. We were invited into homes to see traditional houses, saw traditional handicrafts being made, and was befriended by Bob the local german shepherd. Bob accompanied me on a run in the morning and was greeted by all the locals. This was our favourite town in Maramures. It had no tourists (except us) and everyone was incredibly friendly and welcoming.

This was our third trip to Romania and our first visit to George's place. He is an extremely knowledgeable guide who does not just churn out the usual guide spiel..he unashamedly holds opinions! Our accommodation was clean and tidy, 3 beds and 2 shower rooms with lashings of hot water. There were just the 2 of us so no need to share. We did a variety of excursions including a trip to Ukraine and several walks. George has an almost invisible wife who creates the most amazing food. Romania is not renowned for its haute cuisine, so to have food like this was a real treat. Thanks George.

We stayed two nights with George and his wife. there were five of us and we had three bedrooms and two baths in their comfy house in the tiny village of Botiza. The meals were spectacular with some of the produce coming from their garden behind the house. George took us to Ukraine for lunch...fresh grilled trout...and we toured wooden churches, the merry cemetery and saw dozens of local Maramures residents toting their hoes and scythes out to their fields to work. It is a very special place and George is the very best person to see it with. I want to go right back.

George is a great guide. His pensiune has 3 bedrooms around a common sitting room, with 2 shared baths. It is perfect for a family or group of friends. His wife, the village doctor, cooks wonderful meals (fixed menu for breakfast and dinner). Just behind the house is a wooden church and the setting is beautiful. I was really glad that I hired George to guide us around - he was flexible, knowledgable, and showed us places we wouldn't have found on our own, including visiting his friend with the working water mill. When we showed up at a couple of churches and the doors were locked, he knew who to call to come open them up. If his contact info isn't listed on trip advisor, search lonely planet online. Note that his driving directions are best... my gps sent us via a mostly paved, one lane road over a mountain (stunningly beautiful, not a soul in sight, and nothing I'd hazard in rain or dark) to the back door of Botiza. Botiza is a long way from the bigger towns - the countryside is beautiful and it's a great place to stay.

I stayed three days with George and his wife and had a wonderful time. George was an excellent guide and I felt I learned a huge amount about Romania. We zoomed around all over the place in George's car, stopping where we liked, eg to watch men making haystacks, riding the Mocanita steam train up and down the Vaser Valley and visiting all sorts of beautiful places such as the Merry Widow Cemetery at Sapanta. The house was very cosy and comfortable, and the location was very central, close to the large church and with a babbling stream just outside the front. George's wife is a fabulous cook and made me the most delicious Romania treats. My intention had been to lose a bit of weight during my holiday but this turned into a lost cause due to the irresistable cooking. One small tip - on a hill above George's house is a telecommunications mast. From there, you will get the most wonderful views of Botiza in the evening light. Thank you George - I had a fantastic time.

Following travelling all over Transylvania I drove to Botiza one evening with no booking and being exhausted after a long day I called George who, although his guesthouse was not available at the time, called around to find me a place to stay. He met me in town and took me to a guest house that was able to accommodate which was excellent. He speaks fluent english and is an amazingly nice guy. Next time I am in Maramures I will not hesitate to book one of his tours and stay at his guesthouse. Thank you very much for helping me last minute in the evening so that I was not stranded looking for a place to stay.
