We stopped for tea and scones - scones to die for! So went back next day for dinner and this was excellent too. And everyone was so friendly - other diners as well as staff. We were delighted to find this café.

Welcoming to 2 very wet and cold MTBrs completing a 200 mile pennine circuit. Great tea and coffee, clean & warm and filled bottles without fuss or charge. Also licensed but we had too far to go! Good stop.

We were greeted by a nice friendly welcome by the owners of this cafe which is always good. We called in just for a coffee but were soon enticed by the lovely looking variety of cakes and succumbed to the chocolate cake. The coffee was lovely and the cake again was very nice, it had a hint of brandy, as... More

We stayed here in November on our road trip up north. We stayed in the cottage which was quite quaint but a bit cramped with too much furniture! The bread and butter pudding was excellent although the dinner was a little disapointing, breakfast was very good using local produce. It was busy initially when we arrived, the young girl who... Me and my wife where driving around Durham during our holiday up North, and we stumbled upon this place. We thought we would stop for a coffee but instead ended up having Sunday lunch at this place. The food was amazing, home cooked and the staff where very helpful. Definitely a little gem of a place in what appeared to... More

Stayed here in June 2013. Husband was greeted on arrival by owner denying we had made a booking at all! After seeing proof of the booking we had to stay in a cottage in the grounds of the restaurant as there was no room available for us. Had to wait for old rayburn to warm up the cottage and heat... This is the 4th time my husband and I have stayed at Cafe 1618 and hopefully it won't be our last as we love the 'home from home' experience we get everytime we stay there. The very personal and warm welcome from both Bev and John goes a long way to make you feel welcomed. The quality of the food... More

Not expecting to get a booking for 11 of us at short notice on a sat night we walked into a warm clean welcoming cafe. Lots of choice and with a couple of fussy kids all our needs were catered for. The menu was simple and balanced and priced just right. A fantastic meal in cosy surroundings and nothing was... More

It's special because John & Bev make you feel so welcome. The food is excellent and the service was friendly and informal. You are made to feel like one of the locals and one of the family. The atmosphere was brilliant and we had a fabulous evening with them all. Maybe too much wine!!! The following morning John & Bev... More
