I recently visited Edinburgh for a few days and had a lovely stay at Rathan House in Dalkeith. Ewan and Irene are really lovely people and they go out of their way to help you. On the way to Rathan House I got lost trying to find them and they came to pick me up. It was also nice to... More

The room was adequate and clean but did not match up to it's rating. The breakfast was terrible. A bizarre and pretentious menu accompanied by poor service at a large oval table with orders taken randomly. I had a long wait and my husband was then served 20 minutes after me despite us being asked to come down for breakfast... More

Dear Guest Thank you for taking the time to write a review on Tripadvisor. I am sorry you have not had a good experience with a Highland breakfast. Over the past 17 years we have been much praised by visitscotland and guests for sticking with the cuisine of the Highlands and Islands people. The Scottish Tourist Board gives Rathan an... More

Australian couple in our 50's. Wonderful two nights stop over. Tasty and interesting extras served with scrumptious breakfasts. Knowledgable and interesting discussions with owner. Very clean and comfortable rooms. Two peaceful, solid nights sleep. 2 beautiful, quiet, placid and well behaved dogs playing in a very large back garden. Ample car parking in the front yard. Great position for bus... More

We had a brilliant experience at Rathan House. The host and hostess went out of their way to help us when we experienced car trouble. Their advice was outstanding and playing with their dogs in the back yard and the extra cups of teas soothed our nerves. We were able to use their local knowledge to fill in our two... More

My wife and I were in Edinburgh visiting our daughters at university and Rathan House offered a much cheaper deal than anything in the city that weekend. It is a large house with ample parking. The rooms are clean and comfortable and the welcome was warm, friendly and informative. The big dining table where you can actually talk with your... More

My husband and I needed a bed and breakfast place close to Edinburgh as we were collecting our daughter and all her stuff from the University. We were welcomed by a very genial, friendly and knowledgeable host who gave us lots of useful information about good places to eat. Our room was very comfortable and clean and looked out on... More

We chose this B&B as the location was very close to family, staying for two nights. Handy bus route into town & very frequent service. Nice, clean, well kept rooms, though oddly mine had an elastic cord across two curtains in place of tie backs. Nice garden at the back & the owners are evidently happy to have children play... More

Hi A lot of thought went into switching to keypads. The most important factor appears to us is that they give freedom to come and go 24 hours a day and are common in the workplace nowadays. They have helped preserve guest privacy / security and ours. We have been using them for 11 years and your suggestion that we... More

Family run and has homely feel. Host was easygoing and gave us a flavour of Highland culture, for example the breakfast on offer includes dishes that are different from traditional English or Scottish fare. Good location and ample parking if you have a car to access Edinburgh - a half-hour away. Great fine dining in the evening (Indian and Scottish)... More

Best and most refreshing breakfast I have ever had on my travels. Personaly the absense of a cooked breakfast on the highland breakfast menu was not missed. The alternative more than makes up for it. Great place and very near route 3 for buses.

Not a good place to go if you fancy a cooked breakfast or you want to watch tv in your room also if you want to have a shower everyday take your own towels as they only give you clean ones every second day
