Three kiwis on road trip had to visit Scotland and that means Edinburgh. Ideal place to stay....great experience and fantastic hosts. We stayed three nights and accommodation suited us perfectly...shared room was no problem...great Scottish breakfasts with so many options..so we tried most of them.. delightful host who was full of everything Scottish , and was so helpful on all... We (a family of four) decided to go to Edinburgh at rather short notice and were very lucky to find Rathan House in a list of B&Bs. The owner, Ewan McCrae, turned out to be extremely helpful in a very lively series of emails preceding our visit. We were given a rather small but very cosy family room for the... More

Spent 3 nights at Rathan House during the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Room was very clean and the bed was very comfortable. Great breakfast in the morning. Bus stop right outside your door. Easy 20 minute ride to downtown Edinburgh. Was very quiet got a great nights sleep each night. The dogs Willow and Hooligan were very sweet and well behaved.... More

We stayed at Rathan House for the first night of our trip through Scotland and really enjoyed our stay before moving on. We were very surprised about some negative comments here as we could only find positive things tho say about the place. Lovely and cosy rooms with hearty details like a small "tea corner" with biscuits in every room... More

Staying here is as near as you are going to get to the Faulty Towers experience, except that even Faulty Towers would let you have your own table at breakfast. The poor rating reviews I have read just about sums this overnight accommodation up but the highlights are:- The overpowering owner; Noisy barking dogs who woke me up at 6.00am;... More

Our job is to please. It is easy 2 minute change to put guests at a table on their own at Rathan. It would have been great if you had just asked, we have 2 other tables in the dining room fro 2 and 4. Obviously our house style is to put mixed groups together and encourage guests to talk... More

Interesting reading other reviews. We arrived to the owner showing us to the room . There were 5 adults sharing and that was okay. We found this man a bit overpowering to say the least. He announced that he would have to give us a discount as he was going out in the morning and couldnt do breakfast for us.... More

Your comment is actually fair . I would like to explain a little of the background. My Mum and Dad had a house fire and both had to be hospitalised . Mum also then had to have a heart bypass op. Their homelessness meant I had to house them. I had failed to appreciate the 24 hour difficulties presented by... More

I really want to right a very positive review but i have to keep it honest and unfortunately that means it's not all going to be positive. In fact most of it isn't. I'll start with the good points. The guest house itself is clean although rather dated, public areas smell strongly of the fish cooked for breakfast, rooms are... More

“ ET TU BRUTE !” ....Shakespeare’s Mark Anthony could not have drafted a better post. ( The Brutus speech noted for its masterful nasty faint praise..) I am really sorry, but when you advertise that arrivals are preferred after 4.00 ( or advise if ETA earlier please) and guests are driving from Liverpool ( C. 8 hours) , the Marie... More

I recently visited Edinburgh for a few days and had a lovely stay at Rathan House in Dalkeith. Ewan and Irene are really lovely people and they go out of their way to help you. On the way to Rathan House I got lost trying to find them and they came to pick me up. It was also nice to... More

The room was adequate and clean but did not match up to it's rating. The breakfast was terrible. A bizarre and pretentious menu accompanied by poor service at a large oval table with orders taken randomly. I had a long wait and my husband was then served 20 minutes after me despite us being asked to come down for breakfast... More

Dear Guest Thank you for taking the time to write a review on Tripadvisor. I am sorry you have not had a good experience with a Highland breakfast. Over the past 17 years we have been much praised by visitscotland and guests for sticking with the cuisine of the Highlands and Islands people. The Scottish Tourist Board gives Rathan an... More

Australian couple in our 50's. Wonderful two nights stop over. Tasty and interesting extras served with scrumptious breakfasts. Knowledgable and interesting discussions with owner. Very clean and comfortable rooms. Two peaceful, solid nights sleep. 2 beautiful, quiet, placid and well behaved dogs playing in a very large back garden. Ample car parking in the front yard. Great position for bus... More

It was great having such gracious guests to stay and hope that one day you can come again. We hope your tour of Scotland had all the great weather we had. Thank you for the kind comment. I am sure we don't deserve full marks.....but we keep trying. Irene MacRae More
