On arrival the bar is very dark and does look 15th century but in a good way. Asked a member of staff if we could have a table for two . The dining room is so nice a big room white walls a big open fireplace a great atmosphere, staff very busy but very friendly, nice wines food very homely,... More

I have been enjoying the delights of the "Duke" for over thirty years, and it has changed little in that time, still offering that old traditional Devon country pub atmosphere without the annoying fruit machines and distracting music. It can get busy lunchtimes if you want to eat in the bar area, so best, if you haven't booked a table... More

Visiting friends nearby my girlfriend and I, aware of the inns link to Warhorse and Michael Morpurgo, jumped at the opportunity to stay at The Duke. If you're expecting a museum dedicated to the author or the book then I regret to say that you'll be let down. Yes, there is the odd poster and a few posters dotted about... More

Having eaten here several times over the years, it's a firm favourite and it never disappoints. We had booked a table in the dining room as it's not usually possible to book a table in the bar, but arrived early and luckily got a table in the bar as we prefer it there. It did get very busy and there... More

We've just stayed two nights at this lovely 15th century pub. The pub itself boasts two inglenook fires, a cozy bar and restaurant with excellent service and lovely fresh locally sources food. The owner John is a warm friendly welcoming man, and his staff are great. The locals are welcoming and happy to chat, share their knowledge of the history,... More

The Duke is a great place to eat or just enjoy a drink in a proper, no frills, atmosphere rich pub. There is no fake brass or plastic red velvet, just good gravity-poured beers and wholesome pub food in a fun and welcoming atmosphere. We have eaten there many times, the last time being this month.

Family of four, stayed here for 3 nights. Made to feel at home from the moment we arrived. Great food (breakfast and dinner) great beer and a dart board which our kids loved. Locals all very friendly always wanting to chat.

Staying at this very friendly unusual pub is a unique experience. After a very genuine welcome we were shown to our room filled with furniture from the local skip, but still comfortable if you are deaf to creaks and groans, and the noise of the galley below,we returned below to find a very well stocked bar with draught beer on stills behind,a... Terrific! We all loved this place. As a group of Fat Lad Anglers fishing at Stafford Moor we unfortunately stumbled upon the Duke of York on our last night. It had everything that pleases our fraternity; a comprehensive range of real ales and local cider, atmosphere, hearty and delicious grub, some interesting history and smashing bar staff. Our team (The... More

Really worth seeking out & in the heart of a beautiful village with views across the Devon landscape to Dartmoor. The Duke of York is a real pub without the irritations & affectations of the 21st Century. We arrived on a Friday night to discover a beer festival in progress & great live music outside the pub. Though really busy,... More
