We have recently returned to the UK following a wonderful 12-night stay in Francesca's lovely property in beautiful Scicli. We had flown with Alitalia from London City (highly recommended airport and airline!) to Catania, where we explored for a couple of days prior to hiring a car and driving down to Scicli. The drive is straightforward, mostly on an autostrada,... More

Francesca is the best host and goes far beyond what we would expect- Scilcli is perfect if you like small intimate towns , birdsong, greenery and not many tourists and wonderful gleaming limestone baroque architecture. The little apartment is in a delightful location in tiny cobbled street way overlooking the greenery and cave dwellings of the past yet only 4... More

Francesca, Luigi and their beautiful girls Martha and Sarah were fantastic hosts. We enjoyed in particular Francesca's local stories and knowledge. The house was fantastic and an ideal base for touring the south east of Sicily.Scicli itself is a beautiful place and we really enjoyed our time there. The local people are so friendly and helpful. We are a retired American couple spending the year cycling through the Mediterranean and beyond. The start of our trip took us to Sicily in April, where we spent a week in the town of Scicli at C'era una Volta. After being on the road, the house was a wonderful respite. It was spacious, exceptionally clean, and everything worked! The... More

We stayed here for 5 days, and wish it had been at least twice as long. The house, set in a narrow street, a short walk from the centre of Scicli, immediately felt like home. Francesca is the supreme host, and together with her family made this holiday the best ever. Her walking tour round the town was amazing. The... More

Make you feel home... but on holiday" is our motto. We simply behaved as we'd like other hosts do when we are on holiday. It is our way of being Sicilians, living in a land historically devoted to hospitality. We are happy you liked the house and appreciated the "melograni". Hoping to welcome you back in Spring, un grande abbraccio.... More

We spent 17 days at Cera una Volta in Scicli in September/October. Francesca and her family took very good care of us. The house is beautifully situated in a valley between two hillsides - with cave settlements nearby. The interior is very well planned and functional. My boyfriend and I first visited C’era una volta in September 2012 and have pined for it ever since. When it came to choosing a summer holiday for 2013, there was really only one option – we had to return. If possible, we fell even more in love with it than before. Official Description (provided by the hotel)
C’era una volta (there was a time)….. is a newly restored (2009), tastefully furnished self-catering accommodation; it is a holiday rental meant for couples or families who wish to enjoy a quiet and comfortable stay surrounded by nature and history while discovering Southeastern Sicily. It is located in the suggestive and picturesque “Cava di San Bartolomeo”, facing the rock-settlement of Chiafura on the way from Ragusa, Modica, Noto and Siracusa and 5-10 minutes by car to the sea.It is well located to visit the Sicilian late-baroque architecture of Scicli, Modica and Ragusa Ibla, part of UNESCO world heritage, to enjoy holidays with children, to discover the interesting archaeological sites of Chiafura, Ispica or Kamarina, to visit the sets of the fiction “il Commissario Montalbano" and of many other films, to make suggestive naturalistic excursions through caves, along wild paths and to enjoy the several cafes and restaurants tasting the local traditional cookery. It is a typical early twentieth century Sicilian house, restored using old squared stones for the walls, wood for part of the ceiling and other local raw materials. The charming furniture reminding the past together with the most modern comforts are thought to grant a pleasant and quiet stay to families with children and couples. “Make yourself at home” is our motto. It is on three levels. On the first floor there is a bedroom with double bed and a nice tiny balcony, a small room and the second bathroom. On the top the suggestive roof-terrace from which you can enjoy the view of the surrounding nature and architectures and spend your time in total relax.
