Although i have travelled to Barra several times before it was my first stay at the Castlebay Hotel. First impressions were very good with a friendly welcome on arrival. I choose a double room with seaview and it was great.. very peaceful and although it was midweek in October, there was still lots of activity within the hotel. I was... more

Second visit, though this time it was better than the last, even though the weather was total pants. What made the difference this time was the staff in the hotel. It seemed that the management had recruited a whole load of local and/or Scottish staff who worked as a great little team. The were friendly, efficient and could not do... more

A lovely hotel on a wild, wet, windy and wonderful little island. The hotel has fantastic views of the bay. The young staff were helpful and very welcoming. The food was very good with vegetarian options. The room was tired and could do with a facelift, but it was clean and comfortable. A big screen in the adjoining bar enables... more

The staff won all the plaudits for this reviewer. When we were there , we had an issue with a door that would not fully close without slamming it.Being aware of noise travelling, we advise the staff of the problem .They said that they would get someone to look at it when we were at dinner. The cynical townie(me) thought that this... more

We stayed at the Castle Bay Hotel for four nights. The room was clean, the beds were comfortable and the people at the hotel were exceptionally friendly and helpful. The hotel's decor is rather dated, but we didn't mind that, as it sort of suited the surroundings. The menu has a very wide selection of items, although several items weren't... more

Good and bad to report here. Single room was a disappointment. View was explained up front - hill view. Tiny room. Washbasin out in room and not in bathroom. Room looked like a dingy college dorm. No decor. Curtains half off windows. Mattress was thin and springy feeling. Flat, flat, flat pillows. None of the furniture matched. Wardrobe was the... more

Room was spacious and good, staff friendly. Conservatory was nice. Dinner was very good as was the breakfast. Overall a very pleasant stay and a blessed relief from the "technicolor" hotel we had to vacate early up the road... :-) more

If you get a room at the front, you will get a lovely view. But single travellers are in grim, and slightly grubby, rooms at the back with the chipped furniture. And a washbasin in the room. The view is of a tin shed. I had to wash the tea cup as it had crumbs all over it. more

We nearly stayed here during our recent visit to Barra but unfortunately chose another hotel. Wish we'd stayed at Castlebay Hotel instead and would definitely do so on another visit. We had dinner there one night and it was exceptional. The restaurant was fully booked (usually a good sign!) so we ate in the bar but this was fine and... more
