You'd be hard pressed to find a more relaxed and welcoming place. A great introduction to the laid back vibe that makes Takaka and Golden Bay so special, and a welcome addition to casual clothing optional accommodation. Both naturists and textiles will find this a homely haven with lots of freebies that many other places charge for. Plenty of accommodation... More

It’s very hard to come by somewhere so welcoming, homely and peaceful while meeting many wonderful people from all walks of life, but the magical Gazebo Backpackers does exactly that. Paul, the host, is always willing to share his wealth of local knowledge and tips for Takaka and it’s surrounding areas, helping make the most of your stay in Takaka.... More

Takaka has officially become one of my favorite places in New Zealand. Gazebo doesn't feel like a hostel because beyond just being a place for backpackers to kick their feet up, it's a home. Your hosts, Paul and Raichel have opened their home to travelers from all over the world. Paul is knowledgeable, generous and positive. Pitch your tent in... More

It's not the state-of-the-art sound system and ginormous communal TV, nor the big comfy beds, not even the free wifi or free computer available that made my summer at Gazebo such a special one. Staying at Gazebo is like staying with family. Paul will take time to explain about the best places to go in Golden Bay and even share... More

Gazebo is a fantastically friendly place, the small size along with Paul, the owner make it a great place to really meet people and make the most of the wonderful Golden Bay atmosphere. There's so much to do in the area from relaxing on a beach and checking out the unusual shops 5 minutes slow walk down the road to... More

We came to Takaka for only a week and stayed two months, during that time we Wwoofed for Paul the owner. Paul is awesome very rare to find someone who cares so much about the people around him. We felt so much at home, and the people there were much our family! Paul has bikes that you can take for... More

Such a beautiful place to stay! A lovely relaxed atmosphere and heaps of fun. I felt a bit nervous staying at a clothing-optional hostel, but felt so comfortable and accepted around everyone staying here whatever clothing I chose to wear or not wear. The people I have met here, including Paul (our host) and his lovely dog Rachel will be... More

A splendid place to relax into while you enjoy Golden Bay... Paul and Rachel the dog make excellent hosts for all your needs. The house is located off the main street so it's quiet but still right in the heart of Takaka. A very comfortable stay... I will come back here again and again.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Gazebo Golden Bay Backpackers is New Zealand's only clothing-optional budget hostel and is a great place to stay for the traveler looking for the smaller, quieter experience while enjoying all that Golden Bay has to offer. Situated on a quiet side street just a few minutes walking distance from the full services of Takaka and the Golden Bay Information Centre, accommodation is usually limited to 5-6 people to allow for a unique home style feel to the place. Gazebo Golden Bay Backpackers has two private rooms available - a super king size bed in one and a queen size bed in the other. The dorm room has three double beds and two single beds. Clean bed linens and towels are provided. Well-stocked Home Kitchen, Home Theatre with lots of DVD Movies plus wireless headphones, Free WiFi with Skype, Free Bicycles to Use. The facilities are clothing-optional. This means that nudity is acceptable although not required by any means. Very handy for taking a shower, enjoying the sun or practicing yoga. We have guests that stay clothed all the time or remain nude all the time. Many find this a good place to experiment with their first public nudity experience.
