Well unlike anything I have ever experienced before! Basil Fawlty, Adams Family, Keeping Up Appearances comes to mind! Not particulary welcoming from the get go! Found it a wee bit stressful. Was made to feel a little bit like I was causing a problem just being there and being me. However if you can have a good sense of humour... More

If you want the blandness of a motorway lodge or you are on a Stag do avoid! These folks are real characters. They have spent most of their life in the Far East and retired back to England about a dozen years ago. Spotlessly clean. Fantastic home made food. Had a great breakfast with a real kipper. Gwynne and Roger... More

On arrival we were met with what seemed at the time a barrage of rules with little space for your questions but once you were used to Gwynne's character she went out of her way to be very hospitable. The house is gorgeous, food lovely and would stay again. And Roger is very sweet. Why stay at somewhere boring? These... More

Stayed here during a cycling trip, owners pleasant enough but definitely on of a kind! Make sure you try the homemade bread and marmalade, ignore it at your peril!

First of all, I have to say how misunderstood the Landlady of this B & B is!!! Yes, there is a bannister rule - what no one here mentions is that its 200 years old and understandably wobbly, which is why another bannister is installed on the other side for your use. Yes if you say you want breakfast at... More

As you can gather from other reviews, the landlady is quite a character and the landlord a real sweetie. Great entertainment value, the breakfast is pretty good (fantastic compote), the accommodation very good. I would probably return, but not for a romantic weekend!

Gwynne and Roger should be commended for their effort. Don't take their rules too seriously; just enjoy your stay.........................................

Unfortunately we didn't check this site before we booked. The landlady was the rudest woman I have ever come across. Thank heaven we only had 1 night booked. When we arrived she told us that since we had booked online we wouldn't get our money back if we didn't like the room! I won't repeat what others have said - it... More

We came to Ilex House having read some terrible reviews on TripAdvisor, but we had an open mind. Overall the experience was fun and definitely interesting. Roger was a perfect host, he made us tea on arrival and was always cheerful and pleasant. Gwynne obviously ran the establishment and she had a set of rules which were important as the... More
