I stayed here on a Business trip and I could not fault it! the rooms were spotless and modern. The location is superb, The bar and outdoor seating areas were always busy and had a great atmosphere not to mention there great choice of drinks. Would definitely stay here again

Don't rate it at all! I was overcharged for my drinks & I had the rudest service EVER! According to my receipt, the abrupt, patronising & impatient service I received was from a young girl named Andra. Considering the prices are almost double than nearby public houses, I would expect at the very least to sit & relax with clean... More

We recently went to The Bear for a Sunday roast. While my first two familiar places were fully booked I was glad to find The Bear could accommodate us. Having had such a wonderful meal with excellent service, The Bear will now be the first place I call. The pub is beautifully decorated with a real sense of the history... More

Stayed here on Saturday 12th and can't fault it one bit. On arrival checked in with no fuss and shown to my very nice room by the Manager. I explained that I was going to a Christmas party at Sandown Park and might be back late and was shown the night entrance and felt relaxed to be coming back late.... More

We have been twice this week once for lunch and then for breakfast (only served til 10.30am rather than all day :-(). We were keen to go as the chef is from the utterly excellent Porthminster Beach Cafe in St Ives. Unfortunately he was away for lunch and so we couldn't sample his skills. The meal was ok, plates warm,... More

Less a review, more a warning if you are a family race goer at Sandown. Following racing on Saturday we made our way to The Bear; two mid 56 year olds, a 42 year old and my 9 year old daughter. We arrived at 4.20PM with a view to having a quick drink whilst waiting for our taxi at 5PM... More

We traveled from South Africa & battled to find decent accommodation during the rugby world cup for a decent rate. We found The Bear on the web & decided to pop in and have a chat with manager & little look around. The manager offered us a nice discount should we commit to a 4 night stay! The only condition... We live locally and visit the Bear often. The refurbishment has been done very well and the interior is a great improvement. We recently ate there in the evening with family and I was a bit disappointed. Service was helpful and attentive but the food was a bit of a let down. My main course of smoked cod looked very... In the last few days a refurbished Bear has opened again. From the outside all seems the same but the interior is very different.Themed on racing, as might be expected, the public rooms are bright and airy and clearly a great deal of thought has gone into the new layout. There are larger eating areas but there are also quieter... More

I’ve been to the Bear a few times to eat, and it has always been superb. Good atmosphere, great staff, excellent food etc. The Bear re-opened recently following a refurbishment so let’s start with the décor. Immediate impression is really nice, there’s some interesting quirky touches - like a vaulting horse adapted to become a bench seat in the bar.... More
