Have stayed here twice, once with friends and once with family visiting, and was not disappointed either time! One of the best hostels I have been in hands down. If you visit in the winter the wood stove in the common area is always going, and the hostel itself is so welcoming. Great reading corners, spotless and fully stocked kitchen,... More

This hostel well deserves all the good reviews. It was such a treat to stay here! One of the cleanest, warmest, most charmingly and well-designed hostels there could ever be. It was a relaxing delight to stay at - even the hand soap smelt of peach! And the kitchen... well, I think you just need to visit it!!

The location is really nice and the common room/room is all great! After you check out,you can still stay in common room and use the service. The owner is very nice. Some people are not hospitable for check out people .

From the minute we walked into this exceptionally well appointed hostel, it felt like home. Arriving early, we let ourselves into the common area and were greeted to the warmth of a wood-fired heater which was a welcome relief from the cold. The sofas and elevated tatami matt were comfortable and a wonderful place to relax. Yoshi and his wife... More

Stayed in Aso backpackers in a double in December 2013 with the partner. Absolutely stunning backpacker accommodation, similar to that I would expect in a luxury ski villa. PROS - Spotlessly clean in the communal areas, bathing facilities and the bed linen - Beautiful view of aso-san which can be enjoyed on the small balcony outside - Wifi which reaches... More

First of all, I must preface by saying that before coming to Japan, I had only stayed in one hostel (in the USA), so I don't feel qualified to make comparisons of hostels outside of those in Japan. That said, while Japanese hostels have been very satisfying, this hostel is just on a different level of luxury. Yes, a luxurious... More

First, the mountain itself is beautiful to behold, and you can have a nice window view. Staff is very helpful. There is a nice Onsen across the street. The living room has a huge wood table, every evening the hikers would meet and just talk for hours, and a lot of it is thanks to the good atmosphere. And imagine... More

Aso Base Backpackers was a great place to relax away from the city and explore the local region. It has a cozy mountain lodge feel to it - a log fire stove heats the main open plan common area. Everything is immaculate and new. The owners are a friendly couple who speak good English and are knowledgable about the hiking... More

I stayed 72 day in Japan in many different hostels, backpackers and guest houses but this is definitely the best I've seen! Perfect located, great hospitality and wonderful facilities! A kitchen where you will find everything you need including a lot of spices! Nice and clean rooms with a locker and more than enough toillets and showers, of course super-clean!... More

We stayed here in August (2 adults, 2 teenagers) and it is a fantastically well thought out and run hostel. In fact it doesnt really seem like a hostel - it is so homely! Downstairs is a huge open plan room with kitchen (2 industrial size sinks, 2 hobs, microwave, lovely coffee maker, massive fridge, free tea and coffee, tons... More
