Set in a beautiful river front location, just five miles from the market town of Hexham, the George at Chollerford is a historic building dating back to the 1700's renowned for its fine food and hospitality. It is great to have such a history behind the hotel as we feel we are doing an excellent job of keeping the tradition going, but we have also spent a lot of money upgrading a number of facilities in the hotel including the leisure club, with its swimming pool and gym, situated west of Newcastle we are in ideal spot for walkers, history buffs and gardeners alike - you will be spoilt for choice. The hotel is a perfect retreat in a location that we consider to be one of the most relaxing in Northumbria.

My husband and I had a lovely break here using an Itison voucher. Our room was a good sized double with a view of the river and the bridge. It was nicely furnished and had a large flat screen tv. The en-suite was modern with a big walk-in shower and nice soft towels. The breakfast and the evening meals were lovely. The staff were very friendly. It was a very enjoyable experience.

Parts of the hotel have recently been refurbished, but there is still lots left to do. Such a shame, as this hotel is in a beautiful location!! Wooden windows in need of repair and painting, as well as fascia boards on the building....empty garages in the carpark needing repair....swimming pool buildings looking tatty. The room was reasonable, breakfast would have been fine if the bacon and eggs weren't overcooked and rock hard, and loud pop music at breakfast was annoying to say the least. Especially when we asked to have it turned down, only for another member of staff to come and turn it up again.

Dear P643GXjohnw, Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. With regards to the garages in the rear car park- we have actually demolished the garages to create more car parking spaces for guests. We are continuously making changes to improve all of our facilities. We hope to welcome you back in the near future to see the changes we have made! Best wishes, General Manager

What an excellent stay in this hotel. Staff going above and beyond to help and very friendly. I stayed in the Hadrian suite which was spotless- yes it needs the odd touch of paint here and there but it didn’t spoil my enjoyment. Breakfast was buffet style and there was a variety of food. I heard one woman complain they only had Tetley’s tea- get a life love. Excellent location for exploring Hadrian’s wall and its attractions. Will definitely return.

Really enjoyed our stay. The staff were all friendly, welcoming and hardworking from start to finish. The bedroom was lovely and fresh overlooking the garden. Lots of hot water and fluffy towels. We had evening meal vouchers included with our break and I found the choice, service ,dining room and taste all very good for the money. We really enjoyed our meals. It was nice having a bottle of water on every table. Breakfast was standard fare ,hot and cold buffet style but very enjoyable and everything you need to start the day including lovely thick yoghurt, muesli and fruit. It's an excellent area for walking and the hotel has cosy seating areas with real fires to relax in on return. Also a gym and pool which we didn’t use this time. I didn't see the tired hotel that some reviewers mention, I saw a charming old hotel that is obviously being continually updated and improved on by its owners and lovely staff. Only 1 negative, a personal choice, I couldn't turn the radiator off or down but the windows did open wide so wasn't too much of a problem.

Two night stay on a wowcher deal. B&B Saturday/Sunday and £25pp evening meal voucher for first night. Lady on reception was very helpful on check in and check out. Our room was clean and the bed comfortable. It was situated in the annex and faced the swimming pool. Whilst the heating was on it wasn’t particularly warm and we did notice it got warmer walking towards the main building along the corridor. Our meal and breakfasts were lovely. Nice dining area overlooking the river and buffet breakfast was lovely and warm with a good choice of hot and cold food with fruit juice and pastries also available. The restaurant staff were welcoming and hard working. The chap who worked behind the bar was very nice and helpful. Whilst we slept well both nights the walls in the rooms could do with soundproofing as I’d imagine if you had noisy neighbours it wouldn’t be much fun. We were lucky our neighbours were respectful but you could hear conversations, TV etc. The leisure facilities were an added bonus and the pool was lovely and warm. Didn’t get into the jacuzzi as a family with a toddler were in it the whole time we were at the pool. Sauna wasn’t available. We really enjoyed our stay at the George and would return probably sticking to out of season as we prefer a quiet base

An enjoyable stay on an excellent deal from Bespoke hotels. Check in was fine. Room 101 is a long walk with bags from Riverside car park. Better by far to drive around to large rear car park and enter that way. The room was large with a indoor balcony with garden views. Twin beds were comfortable and bathroom was quite large with a powerful shower in a cabinet. The heating was not good however as the size of room and radiator temperature which never got very warm. Bathroom radiator is controlled from the bedroom but was very cool on normal so it had a temporary boost setting which didn't last long enough to dry towels. Final issue was that with no cistern behind the toilet there was no back support when sitting there. The leisure facilities were welcome especially the steam room and jacuzzi. Sauna not working. We would use the hotel again out of season. My finally minor gripe is that Bespoke hotels repeatedly try to upsell by email. There is no I am not interested button so if you don't agree they email you again and ask you again when you check in online. Asking once is fine 2 or 3 times is not. Please note Bespoke hotels group. We were going to probably eat at the restaurant but as a minor protest against the extra unnecessary emails we ate at the County Hotel in Hexham which was excellent. That said the 2 quite local ladies who recommended ithe County said the food at dinner here was good too. Al in all quite a good place at a good price. Breakfast was good and served in a large Riverside room. Food was self service but reasonably hot and sausage and bacon both tasty.

I stayed here because of the location and proximity to Hadrian's Wall, which I hiked in September 2023. This is hotel is VERY "tired" and in need of some major updates and renovations. The room I stayed in had stained, ill-fitting bedding, a room fan that did not work (which would have been nice, since the room was stuffy), and stained, worn carpeting. The bathroom looked like it had been updated recently, but the plumbing and reliability of the shower was questionable. The receptionists were hit or miss...I had one gentleman who was not very friendly or helpful, but then at another time, there was a woman who very accommodating when I needed some assistance. Food is a bit hit or miss as well...probably the most enjoyable was the mushroom and tarragon soup. Again, as a hiker, all I truly need is a bed and washing facilities; however, for the prices charged by the hotel, I would have expected much better accommodations/experience. Would I recommend others to stay? No, unless you have no other options to choose from.

Absolutely terrible stay, doors banging all night, phone alarms going off in other rooms at stupid o’clock in the morning, over 40 minutes to actually get a full breakfast as at 9 o’clock everything was empty , cobwebs dangling in room above the bed , rubbish on floors from previous people obviously not cleaned properly , stains in towels, sauna out of use, jacuzzi was rotten

The hotel is in an excellent position on the South Tyne. It would be excellent for a summer stay as the grounds were lovely. We didn’t have dinner here but the breakfast was really good, buffet style with unlimited-coffee which is always welcome. Room was comfortable although being used to a super king bed at home, the 4’ 6” was a shock. The shower was powerful and the room comfortable. The hotel has a nice quiet games room with books, etc…Would like to revisit in the summer. The staff were lovely.
