This is one of the oldest hotels, made by Britishers. It seems the hotel has taken experience too far, their attitude towards guest is same, as Britishers treated indians Property as such has good heritage feel to it but poor management has killed the spirit. We were two couples with kids, booked a double suite which was supposed to have a living... Just checking out today 17 Aug'15. Rs.8500/- per day charge is like wasting money here. Cheapness in each area. NO cleanness, hygiene, service, standard of staff. I did booking thru Cleartrip and guess did the biggest mistake. If anyone is planning to go nainital they must deal directly with hotel.

Stay in the hotel was reasonably comfortable. The property is easily accessible to Mall road and the lake. Management and staff were very courteous and helpful. Room service was very good. The hotel also has ample parking space, which is otherwise not easily available in Nainital during the peak season. Since the property is quite old, it requires proper upkeep... More

The Hotel had a good, large property but the rooms were truly in a dilapidated condition. We had originally booked 2 Double Rooms but they were truly atrocious and the management was co-operative enough to shift us at no extra cost to a Double Room Suite which was spacious and included a mini-kitchen. However, the Suite was also in a... More

Stayed in last week of May 2014 and the owner looked after us very well. Only hotel in Nainital which can provide a kitchen that came in handy for our toddler and 3 year old. Rooms are spacious with loads of parking space. Not on the mall road but one way taxi costs Rs 100 from the mall. Overall great... More

Went to nainital in the first week of June. The weather was decent. Evenings were pleasant, however the afternoons were quite warm. Got a nice room in Royal Hotel. The owners were helpful and the staff were ready to help whenever needed. Rooms were comfortable and cozy. The food was also good. Room service was a bit slow and the... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Since the very days when the the British arrived and settled in Nainital, the Royal Hotel has been a defining landmark of this quaint lake town. Established in 1906 by Colonel George Edward Bridge, an officer in the East India Company, the hotel was a hill retreat catering to officers, policy makers and nobility during the British Raj.After the colonial years however, the hotel was taken over by the Indian Government and subsequently sold to the Punvani family which runs it to this day. During the early post-colonial period, the hotel witnessed it’s Renaissance, when it was revived from the ghosthouse that it had become, and transformed into a disco/night club, Nainital’s first and only for a long time. While it may seem ironic, over the decades gone by, the Royal has undergone a complete metamorphosis, but maintains it’s nostalgic charm notwithstanding. After the decade of the swinging seventies, the hotel was renovated and expanded. Six new rooms were built and others renovated to meet modern standards. It was during this time that the Royal was the set for “Masoom”, the Shekhar Kapur directed classic. In addition, the hotel was officially recognized as a heritage hotel by the Indian Goverment. But perhaps, the greatest honour bestowed upon the hotel was it’s recognition in the book of the “Leading Hotels of the British Commonwealth”. To date, it is the only hotel in Nainital to have ever acheived this noteworthy distiction. From British noblemen to Indian businessmen, the Royal Hotel has been a home away from home for visitors since over a hundred years. With it’s quintessentially British architecture, when one walks the corridors at the Royal Hotel, it becomes abundantly evident that history and heritage is all around. Formidable bay windows, wood-burning fireplaces, stone walls, rustic walkways and impressive sculptures echo an old world charm that is seldom recreated in these modern times. It is no surprise then, that guests at the Royal Hotel often describe their stay as unique, nostalgic and unforgettable. ... more   less
