This was our first visit to the South Island and this was our last stop before heading back home. The room which we were told had just been cleaned was not clean, the windows were dirty, the tea towel had not been changed or the tea/coffee topped up. It was definitely not worth $160 per night. While travelling around the... More

We only ate at this place, and we were very very very glad we decided not to stay here (but further up in Otira at the best hostel ever!). The place is quite dated, and the "views" shown in the pictures on the website are misleading as there is actually only 1 table in the hotel that you can actually... More

Overpriced for what it is. Staff were friendly enough but the premises were very basic while fees were high, $150 / night. Locks didn't work, fridge and heater really noisy. Tiny room, table for two with only one chair, very small towels. Noises carry through between rooms. You are paying for the view but the last few rooms really get... More

We are travelling in South Island New Zealand. We booked The Bealey some months ago from UK. When we arrived we were met by a smiling landlord who immediately upgraded us to a family room as no one had booked it that evening. The food was very well prepared by his dear wife. A very warm welcome was given to... More

The view really is stunning. If you're lucky enough to book a suite you'll find a room that is cozy and spacious. The MOA Lodge is a little cramped and feels a bit old. The food is fairly good and the staff are very warm and accommodating. Watch out for the "blood sucking sand flies" (I'm serious that's what the... More

Review by my daughter: I stayed with my dad on a ski trip for 3 nights. The room was large and warm. We ate in the restaurant for breakfast and dinner. The food was yummy. The staff were so nice and considerate. Even though I just kept asking for things there smiles never faded. They lent us dvds and skiing... More

We stayed at the bealey for one night only as we were on our way to the west coast. The hotel is located in a great location at Arthurs Pass in-between massive mountain ranges with great views and pristine water at the nearby river. We booked the cabin lodge number 1 which is the closet to the river which means... More

We pulled up outside the Bealey on a cold dark night, and out hearts sank. It really doesn't look very enticing from the outside, a bit like those old camps that school used to send you to. However, there is a very nice big room with a bar, good hearty food, and some very pleasant company. The fire was roaring,... More

Basic but clean - midges were an issue! Reasonable rates and good location as a stop off. Some very spectacular views from the hotel and drive to and from it.

On the road between Christchurch and Greymouth...on Christchurch side of Arthurs Pass (great road trip with spectacular mountain scenery and some amazing road engineering feats such as the Otira Viaduct) This hotel appears to be in the middle of nowhere and has good walks in the surrounding area. We stayed in the Moa Lodge which is backpacker style basic accommodation-... More
