Stayed here a few times now with my family. We had a transfer to and from the hotel which was absolutely brilliant! The bedroom we had, had 2 double beds, AC, TV, and had an ensuite. All good! The hotel also has a swimming pool, and it's surrounding gardens are beautiful! This would be a top pick for families with... More

This hotel was part of the peruvian 'national tourism enterprise' (entur peru) on the 50's. Afterwards most venues were sold to private entrepreneurs. This particular 'hotel de turistas' was well kept and more than half a century after being made, it now is really in town (when it was built probably it was on the outskirts of Tara, now in... More

This hotel is really good for Tarapoto standards. You can't say it's far away from the city centre because it's not such a big town, but it's not walking distance either, which in my opinion makes it a really good option because it gives you some peace and quiet. The food is nothing outstanding, but it's still okay, the staff... More

I stayed at Rio Shicayo two years ago with my family and had a good experience. Sure, the room was not great and the bedding made of polyester and the food was just OK but, hey this is a 3 star property in Peru and there isn't much to chose from unless you don't want to get ripped off by... More

This hotel may be above average by Tarapoto standards, but it is definitely not up to industry standards in some areas. Location: the location is on the outskirts of the town, but it can still be quite noisy at nights as loud music can be heard from nearby properties. The hotel grounds are pretty and well kept, and you can... More

If you are in Tarapoto and want something in the city, I think this is the place to stay. The hotel property is secluded apart from the city with landscaping, cottages, hamocks, a pool, outdoor bar and a restaurant. Rooms had working AC, a good bathroom and a good TV system as well as a nice outdoor porch. Pool was... More

We were told that the hotel changed ownership in July 2012, about four months before our stay. This might explain the numerous rough edges: testy staff and a run-down facility. Our room had clean sheets and lumpy pillows, a clean, remodeled bathroom and scuffed furniture. The exercise patio is a weight machine graveyard and bird and insect cages sit empty.... More

That is in the city itself. Place is very big, calm and relaxing. Nothing fancy, terrible bungalow design, nothing to do beside laying down on the pool area or swimming. and still... probably the best you will get in Tarapoto.

I stayed twice at the Rio Shilcayo hotel in Tarapoto, plus their sister lodges at Pumarinri and the Gocta Lodge, as part of a birding trip in June 2012. Western tourists need to remember that this is Peru, and reset expectations accordingly. I will briefly share my experiences and do a comparison of the three lodges. Rio Shilcayo is a... More

This hotel is a nightmare. All payment is by international bank transfer from the US, apprently they have never heard of credit cards like the rest of the world. Then after having to go through the hassle of tranfering money from the US to their bank before we arrived, they lost proof of our pre payment even though they previously acknowledged... More
