Our first time here, and hopefully not the last. Hugh and Mary are excellent hosts, we had a great room with lots of character, breakfast was superb, location fabulous, a great place to unwind and have a mini break. I promised to recommend this gem to friends and family and I have already started. Many thanks Hugh and Mary for... More

Well what else can I say perfection at every level , Mary an Hugh are the perfect couple running the perfect Boutique getaway ! From when we arrived on Christmas eve to when we checked out on the Sunday we were treated like celebrities ! As usual as we have been visiting the Strandhouse for 6-7 years now ! It's... More

Just back from our second visit to Strand House. This time over New Year which included a fab new year party. We stayed this time in the Battle Suite which is great if you are very tall (most rooms are historic but with low ceilings). Mary's food and welcome are awesome as are the rest of the team.

We stayed in the Rye Room, which is in the cottage, situated in the grounds of the house. This was our 4th visit at this time of the year, and the service, food and welcome were outstanding. Because the number of guests is limited, it is almost like being at home; but with people looking after you the whole time... More

I have seen some of the negative reviews and couldn't believe they were talking about the same place. Yes, the rooms are not massive and the ceilings are low but if you want large rooms in a modern building, go to a sterile new hotel and not to a 700 year old house with character and charm. However, our room... More

We stayed in the Winchelsea Beach room as a surprise night away for our mum's 60th birthday. What a beautiful, cosy room it was - we couldn't have wanted anything more. The room had low ceilings and a lot of character and was perfect. Everything you needed was provided including a teddy and kitty kat friend! We had pre-arranged Mary's... More

We came for a weekend to get away from London and couldn't have had a nicer stay. The house is an old Tudor build with all the original beams and the furniture is antique giving a real sense of atmosphere and history to the trip. Breakfast was really delicious with local honey and apple juice, a selection of fresh fruit... More

This is a nice old house . Currently run by Hugh and Mary. Mary doesn't have great people skills and I got the impression her heart is not in the job anymore, she lets the place down. Hugh on the other hand is much more jolly and approachable. They're both, sadly, quite sensitive and overly defensive to any criticism of... More

Both Hugh and I remember this couple very well. They left a lovely message in our guest book. 12th- 14th Nov "Mark and Aileen, Amazing place, so cosy and lovely comfy bed! Breakfast is smashing!!" ( and 4 smiley faces!) We both also remember their attempts to get money off the agreed price by complaining and arguing about the rates... More

We stayed for one night to have a quick and quiet break from hectic city life in the countryside. The double room for one night cost £157. For this expected something quite special and I am afraid the Strandhouse really disappointed our expectations. Yes, it's a charming old B&B, breakfast was very good and the room was clean and ok,... We married here 4 years ago and regularly return. Many hotels have a standard formula. At Strand House, Mary and Hugh go out of their way to make everything special. Don't just stay here, make sure that you are there on a night when Mary is cooking. You will not be disappointed, mainly locally sourced high quality foods.
