If you want to get away from it all, but not compromise on attentive service, this is your place. The grounds are nicely laid out. Rooms are done bungalow style. Service is unparalleled. The only shortcoming is the food--good, but not exceptional--and the wine--uneven with few high spots. The variability of the wine was especially surprising. Wharekauhau is owned by... More

We spent two nights here on our short NZ break with three others, with Wharekauhau being the extravagant indulgence part of the trip. We were not disappointed! It was perfect, from the moment we arrived: the amazingly spacious cottages, the fantastic views out across the fields to the ocean, the beautiful and expansive lodge, the superb food, the best service... What an Amazing weekend! We were here for a Louis Roederer Weekend (2 nights). Just 26 people. First night included an amazing wine matched meal while the second night was Champagne matched. From the moment we arrived we felt welcome. Aaron, who is in charge of what seemed like everything, is Awesome! Chef Marc Soper is Amazing! Several people had... More

Stunning location. beautiful accommodation, great food and friendly service. it's eye-wateringly high-end but for a once in a lifetime spot of uber-indulgence (esp. w a helicopter trip to the state from wellington and back), hard to beat.

Get your inner Jane Campion on, and visit this very remote, but very special place. You may think you are lost driving here, but you aren't. It is that remote. Everything about our visit, from our exceptional cottage (radiantly heated floor, huge bathroom looking out at a windswept sea, walk in closet, fireplace, couches and seating, desk, fabulous bed), to... Went for a 1 night getaway. The drive from Wellington is long but not unpleasant, lambs in the fields etc.The views seem to get more scenic the closer to Wharekauhau you get. We were made to feel right at home and having our bags taken down to our cottage was a nice touch (there are no carparks/roads near the cottages... More

Would be difficult to find a better night's accommodation in NZ. Everything about this was top notch. Immaculate, beautifully finished rooms with splendid bed, lovely fire and plush, modern bathroom. Complimentary gin. I love the way it comes with a dinner and pre-dinner aperitifs package. Fastidious service, but not overwhelming. Yes, it is expensive, but a lot is included, and... More

Our second visit. First was outstanding and always going to be hard to beat. A very special place. Cottage suites are luxurious with lots of space and well equipped. You feel like you are the only one at the lodge. Beautiful surroundings. It really is what you see on the website. Appreciated complimentary internet which was excellent in both the... More

10,000 acres of pure luxury!!!!! Imagine yourself as the owner of a ranch with sheep farming, beaches, hillocks, Manuka Trees and much more. An excellent contemporary resort with 14 villas and exceptional host! Fantastic culinary experience too .......... fantastic wine cellar too........The cottage villas are awesome with a real fireplace and french windows opening into the wilderness.

The Wharekauhau team were fantastic, the rooms were spacious, comfy and warm with underfloor heating and a glowing gas fire (even though it was freezing outside!), the food delectable and the entertainment options great. And the cottages are snuggled into the ground so that they're sheltered but provide the most picturesque outlook over farmland, rugged coastline and moody water. I'd... More
