Compared to other Pousadas (e.g. Estremoz) this place has similar charme and lots of spaces to discover (original frescs, small chappels etc.) but the rooms have been installed maybe 25-30 years ago and nothing has been renovated - really nothing. Doors are old, Windows missing paint, floors are worn-off and bathoom looks like 1980... beds are good (replaced I suppose)... More

This Pousada is truly magnificent. An old nunnery set on the edge of the city next to the Palace. On arrival we were greeted with a friendly and helpful reception and shown to our room. The rooms are spacy and the bathrooms have all the facilities i.e. hairdryer, shower gel and shampoo and moisturiser. Did enjoy the little chocolates left... More

Me, my wife and our 8 months year old baby boy stayed in this Pousada in April. The service was great, great breakfeast and location. Within walking distance from the small center, and very close to the Palace that you probably want to visit. Super service in the Pousada also, only bad parts were the dinner (not so special) and... We spent one night here making use of the incredibly good-value spring offer. Bed and breakfast for us both for under 70 euros. It is a fabulous building right next to the Royal Palace. Rooms are very comfortable if a little cold at the time. Staff were helpful and cheerful. Breakfast was good - but ask for coffee from the... More

Great facilities and staff allow myself and family to enjoy a great weekend. Enjoy friendly Recepcion, large bedroom for 3, excelent breakfast and lunch, friendly staff, enjoy a afternoon in front of large firewood at the enormous living room. Based on old monastery, near a Royal Palace we feel living like kings. :) Would like to come back soon!

A historic pousada in a pretty town, the hotel is housed in a converted convent, immediately adjacent to the residence of the last king of Portugal (visit by guided tour, in Portuguese, only). The pousada is well signposted and easy to find, and makes a good base for exploring the small town and surrounding area. There is plenty of parking... More

A huge convent next to the Ducal Palace, sympathetically converted into a hotel. Lots of marble from the local quarry. All the staff were friendly and helpful. Our room was an adequate size and had the weather been nice we would have enjoyed our little balcony. It was cold and rainy while we were here but the hotel was warm... More

This lovely old convent has been converted into a wonderful hotel. There is so much history within these walls adorned with frescos inside little alcoves, but the sun-drenched halls opposite the cloister were my favorite. The windows are covered with wooden shutters and the sunlight streaming through them creating shadows was very appealing to me. The second floor room we... More

We have stayed in a number of Pousadas in Portugal over the past few years and Vila Vicosa is one is the best. We were made very welcome by the staff as soon as we arrived a given a guided tour on the way to our room. We were on the first floor which included a roof top balcony which... More

We arrived at the Pousada after driving from Lisbon and found it eventually after asking directions from a nearby hotel. We were shown to our room by the reception manager without much conversation even though we tried. The room (a suite) however was lovely and spacious, with an outside area overlooking the rooftops. The Pousada itself is very special, with... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
He Pousada de Vila Vicosa, opened in 1996, is installed in the historical centre of this Alentejo city. The Pousada is found in the old Convento Real das Chagas de Cristo (The Royal Convent of Stigmas of Christ) ordered built by D. Jaime, the forth Duke of Braganca in the sixteenth century. D. Jaime ordered the building of this religious house to serve as Pantheon for the Ladies of the House and to welcome his daughters from his second marriage who could not decently marry. Through the years some legends became associated with the Pousada. Ever since the mythical presence of the last mother superior, who still watches over by the convent, the attempt to build a direct passage to the Paco Ducal, which lies next to the Pousada. It is believed that the frescoes of the building were written by Cecilia of the Holy Spirit, poet and painter, who worked in the convent until the date of her death in 1723. Staying at the Pousada de Vila Vicosa is a trip to the furthest reaches of fantasies, we guarantee extraordinary experiences. With its themed rooms, staying in this hotel is like sleeping in a museum, where for a moment we are actors in this imaginary world. ... more   less
