We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Wheelwrights Arms. This was our first visit to England and after a frazzled drive from York and some difficulty parking our large (relatively speaking) rental vehicle, we stopped to soak in the beauty of Monkton Combe. All business is conducted at the bar. Check-in was seamless and we were shown to our rooms,... more

Lovely spacious accommodation in a beautiful setting. Room clean and nicely presented. Would have liked a second armchair in the room, as one of us had to sit/lie on bed which was not satisfactory (the room was big enough) Main disappointment was the evening menu which had limited selection and significantly overpriced for what you got. Shepherds pie and fish... more

My husband and I stayed for two nights to combine a short break with collecting our daughter from the University. An idyllic country location and beautiful buildings and garden just couldn't make up for the poor service. The owner has no people skills whatsoever with no greeting and no smile at any point during our stay. Our daughter joined us... more

It has to be said that this pub is visually an idyll. Beautiful buildings isurround a beer garden and its all set in in a perfect Cotswold stone village. The rooms are nicely decorated but a bit small and could perhaps do with a deep clean...on the surface they are OK but look a bit harder & they are grubby.... more

After reading the reviews again I was little apprehensive as we were going away for our 5 year wedding anniversary but these doubts were put to rest as soon as we arrived. In the dark it is a little hard to find but once you arrive you can see the beauty of the place! The receptionist showed us accross to... more

Arrived late Friday afternoon and after booking in with a young man behind the bar we were handed a key and directions to our room across the courtyard. No offer of assistance with bags or any other information. Room was as expected with decent sized bathroom that was starting to show a little wear and tear. Bathrobes were available but... more

Well it all started very well. The location is pleasant and both the pub and the bedrooms are of a high standard so no complaints there. Our bathroom was also excellent. What was disappointing was the service. It was very hit and miss and the owner or if he was not the owner the manager really is in the wrong... more

We were looking forward to our stay as reviews have been positive overall. First things first, the room was fine, breakfast was decent, and the beer was well-kept. On the other hand, our welcome was cool (no sign whatsoever of the 'warmth' we were lead to expect), our sleep was disturbed by early-morning deliveries, dinner was indifferent, and the room... more

I would have stayed here. I booked it over a month ago, requesting a double room as a much-needed post-christmas break for my boyfriend and I. I just rang to confirm and was rudely told by the male receptionish that we'd been downgraded to a twin. i said no, that's not right, there must be a mistake, please look again.... more

We stayed at The Wheelwright Arms in Monkton the first weekend of June 2007. This Country Inn is an idyllic place in an idyllic setting. Beautifully restored with the Restaurant/pub in one building and the accomodation in adjacent buildings seperated by a lovely beer garden. We stayed in a small room (our choice as we need a proper shower and... more
