Lovely pub with pleasant staff team more than sympathetic to the needs of ramblers and their dogs but with a large area reserved too for those preferring to sit, eat and drink without the company of dogs. Good reasonably priced food and a warm welcome to anyone. Excellent rambles nearby on the Calke Abby estate (Naitonal Trust).

Had a lovely meal and good value. Three causes for £15. We were a large group and the mains didn't arrive at the same time. When you are ordering as a family group you expect the meals to arrive together. Down side are the facility's, welcome family's and children but no high chairs and no baby change.

Just back from a lovely two night stay. Very friendly and welcoming staff, excellent food and a convenient location for getting out and about. Very clean and comfortable rooms, we will definitely be staying here again.

We had booked an overnight stay (first visit) to this attractive village inn, when our car broke down about six miles away. After being towed off the main road by police and rescued by an AA Relay wagon, we arrived at The Staff of Life about four hours later than intended. When it became clear we could not make it... The people at the Hotel were really friendly and helpful. The room was clean tidy and in good condition, as was the bathroom. I understand from a discussion with the owner that redecoration of some of the rooms was planned for the near future. We eat twice while we were there, a lunch time stack, and breakfast the following day.... More

I booked three rooms so that friends were able to stay with us. The rooms were comfortable although the room on the top floor was quite warm and maybe required a fan. Very quiet area and lovely location in a village environment with plenty of amenities close by like Calke Abby etc. Kaye was very accommodating and allowed us to... More

Stayed for one Saturday night to arrest a family function in nearby Hartshorne. We arrived in the early afternoon and decided to have lunch whilst the landlady sorted out the rooms etc. The four meals were well prepared and delicious, including gammon, battered cod and southern fried chicken with chunky yummy chips. It was all reasonably priced and served with... More

Stayed two nights recently. Comfy bed, spoilt by untidy bedding and making up but slept well. Shower room (no bath) seemed new, good large shower, nicely tiled but spoilt by vanity sink with a shelf above in completely the wrong place on which you hit your forehead when trying to clean teeth, etc. Also no loo roll holder - rolls either... We stayed at the Staff of Life for a one night break to do some walking in and around the Ticknall area. The pub/restaurant is easy to find on the main street of Ticknall with ample car parking spaces. There is a nice beer garden area to the rear of the pub that has pleasant views across the meadows and... More

I stayed here while I was at Donington for the Superbike weekend. Nice welcome and the Landlord even made sure my bike was safe for the night ! I stayed in room 8 which was on the top floor, the room had a very new feeling and the bathroom/shower still had that new shine about it. Nice comfy bed and... More
