What a place. Enjoyed every minute of it. Arriving at the place to hear Pink Floyd playing in the 12th Century Chapel signaled the start of a memorable week. Possibly not for the faint hearted, more Chateau quirky than Chateau Grand. In Claude was an amazing and welcoming host whose enthusiasm and hospitality was a true treat. Lots to to... more

I've been to France many times on holiday and love the place - the climate, the food, the architecture, the cultrure, and so on ... but by far the happiest, most hilarious and interesting holiday I had was at the Chateau de la Voloniere. Don't go there if you expect Formula 1 or Travelodge B & B. To go there... more

I have been going here for 7 years - I don't seek perfection I seek tranquility great surroundings a house with a million stories an owner who has clearly un uphill struggle on his own to keep this place going and this is clearly a labour of love. I love the quirkiness, the history the very natural garden and this... more

This chateau is living history - definitely for the more adventurous traveller. Claude is so welcoming, plying us with wine in his beautiful vaulted historic dining room. He can't do enough for his 'new family'. This is our third visit, using it as a two or three day stopover en route to other parts. We used his cycles and spent... more

We are a family of 2 adults & 2 children aged 6 & 4. We loved our week long stay at the Chateau de la Voloniere with Claude & his dog Fifi. We self-catered in the 'Arthur' Rooms which were clean & comfortable. The Chateau is an amazing place & Claude is full of fascinating stories. Nice walks around the... more

I am writing on behalf of the Austin Healey Club of England, South Western Centre. In 2007 we were looking for a location within easy driving of Le Mans. Our plan was to take a group of about 15 cars over for the Classic Le Mans week in July 2008. One of our members found the Chateau on a UK... more

I agree with the reviewers who didn't like this place. There is nothing special about this place except that it was the biggest contrast between what I expected and what is there. After reading the glowing reviews I was expecting at least a decent place. The promises made in the advertisement for this chateau were just that. Disappointed with the... more

Turtlebabies: We are not sure how to respond to this complaint as we do not believe this guest to have stayed at the Chateau in August 2008 as they claim as we had no guests that fit their description staying at around that time. The Chateau was mainly booked out to groups. We asked them for further details of their...

Our 5th stay at the Chateau in less than 18 months! We just can't stop coming back for more. Our children just love exploring the grounds with Fifi (owner's very friendly dog) by their side and really enjoy the freedom and experiences this offers. It is one of the most unique places we've ever stayed and that's part of it's... more

POSITIVES: 1. the chateau is incredibly charming and if you are crazy about mystery, there are catacombs to explore (but first you have to crawl on your knees through a pile of rubbish), the abandoned attic (we are talking 13th century attic), and other creepy attractions. 2. Claude prepares breakfast served in an old refrectory (perhaps 700 years old), and... more

RonW1: In response to some of the claims of this reviewer, we would like to counter what has been written by stating the following: The room at the back that they claim has no but maybe 1 window 10” away from the rock face is “Barbe Bleue”. This room does in fact have 2 windows plus 1 Velux window. Yes...

The Ritz is's not .. and yes there are areas of the chateau which smell damp and need some TLC. But given the age of the chateau, not that surprising. But what an experience. We had a fantastic time. Claude was a great host and knew all the history. He took all the guests for a walk round the labirynth... more
