As a family with 4 children, it is always a risk when going on holiday, that the children are going to be kept occupied and happy. At Coral Rock, everyone had a fantastic time. My teenage son spent days snorkelling and kayaking, and my two young boys spent hours in the water or playing with hermit crabs on the beach,... more

We stayed at the Coral Rock for 10 days earlier this month. I so agree with Dooshlibob's review - it is a fantastic place. I have just been posting my photos this afternoon and am still stunned by the views. If you want somewhere to unwind this is the place. But you have to remember this is Africa - so... more

My 12 year old daughter and I stayed at Coral Rock for four days, and we loved it. Neil and Gillian make a big effort to make people feel at home, and very welcome. They are friendly and relaxed as are all their team working there. While it isn't flash, when little things didn't work they did their very best... more

I want to congratulate Neil and Gill on their aceivement in upgrading the hotel to it's present status. This couple is the most generous, welcoming, helpful management team and ever striving to keep their patrons as happy as possible. We had the most awesome 2 weeks holiday at this gem in paradise. All the cottages have breath taking osean views.... more

Having read through all of the reviews, both good and bad, I am happy to report that I had a fantastic 7-night stay at Coral Rock and can safely be added to the much longer list of "good reviews". The bad seem to mostly be in the past, and the good seem to be getting better. It seems that Neil... more

Good: 1. nice pool 2. friendly staff 3. beautiful view/ ocean (even though the ocean is frequently not swimmable) 4. staff are willing to help 5. restaurant food is okay (you need to order your food at least one hour ahead of time - orders take 1-2 hours to prepare) Bad: 1. the surrounding village is really run down, there... more

Travellers from the 1st world nations would do well to research Zanzibar and Coral Rock before deciding to travel here. First of all we are located one hour's drive from Stone Town in a real traditional Swahili village. This is real Africa, 3rd world and poor - but incredibly beautiful. We have had to build our own infrastructure here. We...

I have just returned from Coral Rock Hote in Zanzibar today and I couldn't wait to share my experience with everyone. What a fantastic place! The food, atmosphere and staff make this hotel a magical place. The owner Neil and his wife Gillian are warm, friendly and incredibly accommodating. They are always visible and happy to help, the hotel would... more

Reading the reviews are interesting - as nothing seems to have changed since our visit in April 2009. The hotel has great potential and the swimming pool and (local) staff saved our holiday from becoming a complete disaster. The even ran out of beer!!! The management still seem to be 'moving problems around' and not fixing them. Bedrooms are dirty,... more

I am Neil the owner (and since only July 4 2009 the manager). We were at the hotel in April 2009 on holiday and had not commenced management ourselves. I agree that in April 2009 the hotel was not realising it's true potential which is why we decided to emmigrate to Zanzibar and take over mnagement ourselves. Since then we...

What a fabulous 3 weeks we had at Coral Rock. Any concerns we may have had about taking 2 young boys (8 & 11) to the "edge of the world" - and this place really does seem like that, we're immdiately dispelled as soon as we arrived. We had our own self-contained 3 bedroom house right next to the hotel... more

My husband and I stayed at this hotel for 8 nighs of our honeymoon trip to Zanzibar last year and will never ever forget the view as long as live. We lost hours staring out at the expanse of beach and perfect turquoise water - it could not have been any more relaxing after a hectic wedding! The full moons... more
